Fireplace/Heatilator Question

We just bought a house with a fireplace that has a heatilator insert that is probably 20 to 40 years old (house built in 1970). It's black with brass trim, glass doors and a blower/fan. My husband wants to pull it out (he has tugged on it--seems like it will easily come out), because it's more aesthetically pleasing to have just an open fireplace, but I'm thinking of heat loss, especially if we want to have fires during the window.

My question is, does it really make a lot of difference one way or the other, in regards to heat loss?
