HELP!! 1st elec bill with Hydronic Radiant heat is $600!!!

I've just now picked myself up off of the floor from receiving my monthly electric bill for $ 592.00!!

We installed a hydronic radiant floor into our new remodeled 1800 sq ft home in Seattle, WA. The flooring is pex with a 1-1/2" layer of thin concrete. We used an Electro-Boiler EB-MA-15 and have 3 separate zones. The construction is 6" walls with R-21 in the walls and R-38 in the ceiling.

The original house was a summer cottage at 710 sq ft with no insulation. We used 2-3 space heaters to heat the house and the monthly electric bill was never more than $ 200. We have relatively low electric rates compared with the rest of the nation.

We NEVER expected that it would cost $ 600 per month to heat this house even in the coldest month. Last month's lows were down to 20 with highs in the 40's. we are now back up to 30 lows with 50's during the day. The elec co says the system is still kicking all day long.

We called the plumber and he says the costs are high because we dont have drywall yet. I cannot believe drywall will bring that cost down.

Can anyone (with knowledge in this area) shed any light on this?

I'm about ready to shut the darn thing down and start all over.

Thanks for any info

With fiberglass insulation you need an air barrier more than the kraft faced paper in my opinion to keep the air from moving. I had an area in my basement that was a conventional wall 3-4 feet high and 30 feet long with just insulation and the basement was a freezer through the winter until I covered it with drywall. Fiberglass insulation has a very poor insulating factor if air can move through it. You need to create a barrier from the air inside the house to the air in the wall and the outside air.

Thanks, that is good info. The drywallers are putting a vapor barrier between the insulation and the drywall so that should help. I just hope it helps a LOT!

We heat our poorly insulated office of about 500 sq. ft with an electric boiler in PA for about $500 per month in the winter. The electric rates here are 10 cents total per KWH.

I think you'll see a savings when your project is done.

I'm guessing you have a 3 element, 15KW boiler, same as ours.

As long as it isn't overheating the room, it is what it is. They are 100% efficient.
