New Furnance - What to buy?

Hello - buying and remodeling an older home with original furnance. Need to replace it. Fuel will be propane at first with a potential Natural gas upgrade in the next couple of years. What should I look for and look out for?

What is your location and what is your electric rate?

Once the remodeling is complete, how would you describe the insulation properties of the home including windows?

    Post back.

Location is northeast, rate is approximately $.10kWh.

We will be gutting & re-insulating about %50 of exterior walls & adding new vinyl siding with a low r value (2-4 i believe), hopefully close to r-20 on exterior walls when done. Adding insulation to attic to achieve between r-40 - 50. Windows will be replaced with energy efficient double pane low e.

Your best system would be dual fuel. I would recommend a fully modulating furnace paired with high efficient heat pump.

You want to understand what type of burner kit is needed to go from propane fuel to nat gas.

My personal favorites would be Carrier/Bryant and Trane/AmStd.

Sizing is important both in comfort and operating costs. Obviously, new system should be sized to your remodeling improvements. Get a load calc in writing. And please don't overlook your ductwork system.

thanks. Our contractor suggested Goodman, I seem to be finding mixed reviews on this site. It seems they have gotten better recently though. Any opinion?

    goodman isn't a bad product.
folks get too set on brand names.

    getting a properly sized
efficient as you can afford is
    the best option.

avoid the 500 sq ft per ton guys
    invest in a load calc.

what do you think of tigerdunes
    suggestion?

invest in air sealing the new addition
and the existing home. have a blower door
    test done, seal and retest.
do the same with ductwork, mastic seal & test.
Resnet.us is a good source for energy
raters who do blower door and duct testing.

    best of luck

HVAC talk had some good info on Goodman. From what i can see the installation seems to be the most important part for any brand. From a price to value perspective it seems like a good choice especially if the warranty is applied correctly. thanks for the input. ill also mention the above suggestions to the perspective installer.
