Need Help on a Hydrotherm A-100 Pulse Boiler
| | |

| I have a Hydrotherm A-100 Pulse Boiler and the original gas valve is bad and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement gas valve. The problem is this boiler does not have a pilot, instead it works off of pressure and the gas valve thermocouple is actually a piece of small tubing from the pressure chamber of the boiler to the pressure sensing device on the valve. The original gas valve is a 120Vac Honeywell VR445M1009; we've checked several sites and found replacements for this valve but all are 24 Vac and use a standard thermocouple safety which I cannot use on this boiler since it doesn't have a pilot. The voltage of the valve is not a big problem. Can anyone help us find a valve that uses a pressure safety instead of a standard thermocouple? |

| First of all, congrats on keeping your controlled explosion in a beer can boiler so long. Compliments for the install and application must me given to the installer, as he must have done well as these boilers didn't last long unless applied properly which wasnt too often as it's piping requirements were before their time. The replacement for the gas valve is VR8345M4302, and will require a 120/24v stepdown transformer. Your boiler is direct ignition which this valve covers. What you are mistaking as a pilot/thermocouple tube is actually just a vent line for the OEM gas valve step-down regulator. VR8345M4302 gas valve description: 24 Vac Dual Direct Ignition/Intermittent pilot Gas Valve with 3/4 in. x 3/4 in. inlet/outlet, standard opening and 3.5 in. wc pressure regulator setting Universal electronic ignition combination gas control for use with direct spark ignition, hot surface ignition or intermittent pilot ignition in 24 Vac, gas-fired appliances, with capacities from 30 to 415 cfh. |

| z1700 - Thank you for the quick response, the info, and the installation praise as I installed the boiler approximately 26 years ago. It sounds like you are familiar with these boilers. I knew the piece of plain tubing was not a thermocouple, but I didn't know the purpose of the tubing. I had looked at the valve you recommended before we posted our question, but I wasn't sure the ignition control would let it operate. The stepdown transformer is no problem. Do you have any recommendations for a good cast iron replacement boiler; one that is somewhat efficient? |

| Your going backwards with cast iron with exception to the ray boiler by Mestek, but it's too new to comment on. All cast iron boilers in production are good today, it comes down to the piping and install. Why not consider the Triangle Tube Prestige? Fair price and the best value for your dollar |

| Thanks, ZL700. We have it fixed for now, we'll have a little time to decide on a replacement. |

Ack! Newbie here; post got swallowed when registering! Ack! I installed NatGas A-50 HydroPulse 1987. Mech sequence timer failed '93; rplaced w/ electronic type. Flawless since then. Got 2 used A-100s for parts but turned out to be LP type, so some parts NG for me, but presume could convert gas valve to NatGas (w/ correct orifice). Also have OEM training /service manual & bought some other spare parts too. Inlet discs just wore out; doing 1st tune-up! Going to try to keep it runnin. Think good plan? Alternate for HydroTherm HydroPulse boilers?
| | |
@z1700: re A-50 HydroPulse, forgot to mention, I installed w/ constant circulation design (no outdoor reset needed, always runs lowest possible circulated water temperature, maximizes condensing mode, etc). I too should be looking for another boiler, but most do not seem to be runnable in constant circulation mode. You seem to be knowledgeable, why don't more OEMs use /recommend constant circulation? Also, link you suggested went stale, this what you mean? Thx, Jeremy mala0623bon-at-gmail.com |

| I have an A-100 boiler but my manual is for the AM-100. How different are these boilers? I'd like to get the correct manual. Thanks. |
