Confused heat pump duct work

Hello, we need to replace our 20 year old Trane heat pump. We live in the foothills of North Carolina. We have got 4 estimates for heat pumps. We have decided on a 15 SEER 3 ton unit, our house is about 1800 square feet all one floor. Now here's the big question. All 4 company's have recommended that we have all new ducting installed which adds about $2500.00 to the price of the heat pump installation. Now we ain't po folks but that's a lot of extra money and we are getting up in age (80 & 75) so is all new ducts and oh yea, one new return vent necessary. They gave reasons from condensation will rust the duct work to the ducts are too small for the new unit. The house was built in 1972 and has always had a heat pump. Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!
