If your defrost function and aux heat strips are operating correctly, you should get warm air. Remember the HP is now acting as an AC condense and the heat strip is used to temper the cold air.

The outside condenser fan does not run in defrost function.

Good quality hP thermostats usually have some indicator on the face showing aux or emergency heat strip operation. Can't say about the 950.

Yeah, I've searched everywhere on net & in owner's manual & I can't find any signs of Aux/Emerg heat status when it's running.

I know when I force it manually into emergency heat, it shows an "E" on one of the settings icons but otherwise when I turn emergency off, it doesn't show anything if it defrosts.
