Having, long ago, been in that business I can tell you that you want the best guy in the neighborhood doing it for you and he will not be cheap, nor should he be. After sale support is essential, so buy from a guy who has been trained by the manuf whose equipment you are using.

I would suggest to you that you look at the mini-split heat pump systems. Mitsubishi and Fujitsu are the top brands. They are very close to the efficiency of the gshp without all the hardware. Well, in august 2012 our contractor finished the installation of two 3 ton waterfurnace units, 4 zones and a humidifier for 46,000 including the 6 150 foot vertical wells. An excellent installation that has run flawlessly since the install. We are in central KY and our installer is well experienced, specializing in Geothermal, and doing dozens of installs a year.

We are located in a part of SE PA without the availability of natural gas. That's why I am leaning towards GSHP. We also have 2 acres to take advantage of horizontal loops

Wow! srjohnt, that's more than $24,000 cheaper than what our HVAC quoted us on a comparable unit! Doubt the difference between installing a unit in KY vs PA is worth $25,000. Since PA has one of the most concentrated GSHP areas, you would think prices are more competitive. Thinking more and more that the HVAC guy is relying on my builder's exclusive deal and relative affluent clientele.
