Question about a specific web hosting...

Greetings,

I have completed 2 websites in Dreamweaver and am ready to upload them.

I am planning to use Bravenet and purchase the 5 year plan since that would be much less expensive. My question is this...I'm a bit nervous because I can not locate a telephone number to call on their site in case of a problem. Should this be a concern?

Those of you who use this site for hosting can you provide me with any feedback?

My websites are for non profit organizations so I want to make sure I'm considering the correct hosting site as they do not have a lot of money to waste.

Sorry its taken so long for someone to give you any feedback on this matter.

You might have already made a choice about what to do, but if it was me I would be very leary of paying for a 5 year plan at any webhosting site! If you are not happy with the service you would most likely not be able to recover any of the money. The first thing to do is go to Google and type in "Bravenet Comlaints" and do some reading. What little I did read was not favorable. The first red flag for me when I went to the site was having to search for information about cost and that should be up front as far as I'm concerned. I know Bravenet has been around for quite afew years now, but that doesn't make them a terrific web hosting site and their free accounts with all the forced adds and banners is a definately a turoff for me.

As for a phone number to reach someone here is a site that has that information and you do realize they are located in Canada don't you?

Don't go 5 years. A lot can happen in that time. They could get purchased and all of a sudden you have a junk host and your only option is leaving a few years of hosting on the table while you have to somehow extract your domain away from them (assuming you register it with them). Hostgator is good - see how they compare. And they offer chat support and phone support. The chat support i s actually very good. Even with Hostgator, I would not go for more than 2 years at a time. I would register the domain(s) at a separate place like godaddy or namecheap - this allows you to easily make a switch if needed.

I own and have installed quite a few photo editing programs but I prefer to use Picasa 3 (which, btw, is free) because it is so simple to use to upload to online albums (and their storage site with album(s) is also free up to 1 gig of media). They also provide the code to use to easily insert photos. When I sign in GW, its the home page. Then I open "Forums" page. There you have all kinds of listings of the forum, alphabetically, by name,....you name it. But, to me most things that gardeners grow(not landscaping, not flowers, ..) fit into VEGETABLES. There you can see a bigger crowd talking about all kinds of vegetable(including tomatoes, peppers ,.. herbs) The next crowded(w/most participants) and lively forum is "Growing tomatoes". No wonder b/c tomato is the most popular vegetable grown by gardeners across USA and elsewhere. I personally, also visit the following forums regularly: --- Herbs --- Alliums --- Asian Vegetables. --- pumpkins, squash... --- beans, .., legumes ... I also do go to my regional gardening group forum on occasionally. Not very often, because I am not interested in shrubs, landscaping etc. I already know enough about them and it is not something that I have to deal with everyday. Also, I have no interest in issues like container gardening, harvesting, All in all, there are many forums for just about anybody who wants to learn or contribute.

Generally, a consultant just builds in the cost of their operating expenses (including office rent, travel to meetings with clients, utilities, software, equipment, taxes, etc.) into their base rate. Charge him whatever per hour for the work, but include the cost of your equipment into it; a separate charge is going to look like you are being cheap. Since you are not buying new equipment or software, you can't expect to pay it off through this small contract. On the other hand, depending on how much a percentage of time the equipment may be devoted to income-producing work, you may be able to amortize some of the costs for tax purposes.

I don't know anything about AOL, Connie. So I'm not sure what they have to offer. I'm not sure why Paul doesn't like Godaddy.com. He probably has a valid reason and I definitely trust his judgement. But I can say from my experience that I have used them for registering domain names for over 3 years and have not had one single problem with them. I have registered 3 names with them and they have only cost me $8.95 a year each. The first 2 things that you need to do is: 1. Decide where you are going to get web space. Does your account with AOL give you free web space? If so, I would use it. If you plan to use the website for a commercial site then make sure you can use the free space for that purpose. My isp gives me 100 mb's of web space and they don't care if it's used for personal or commercial use, but some isp's want you to pay extra for commercial use. To give you an idea about how much space that is.....I have 97 web pages online, which total to less than 20 mb's. And most of those pages are filled with photos. So 100 mb's is a lot of space!!! 2. Decide which company you will use to register your domain name. There are quite a few companies out there and you can do a search for them. I used GoDaddy.com because someone at either this forum or the computer help forum recommended them several years ago, and I have been very happy with them. Maybe someone else can recommend a site for registration that they have used. Once you have taken care of those 2 things, then the rest is a piece of cake. Make your webpage(s) and upload them.

I recommend Hostgator and Namecheap as well. I have built several sites using Hostgator as my host and Namecheap to buy my domain names and they have been fantastic. If I have a question or need help, they have always gotten back to me in minutes. If you are looking for a host that is easy to get set up (like I needed) then Hostgator is worth a look. Hope this helps.
