How to do your own site

Hello

Is there a way or a site that tells you how to make your own web site? I want to do one, text, pics. and add paypal to it. To sell my items I make. thank you B.

I would recommend learning HTML and also web design and management. There are many local colleges that offer these courses. You can also use free tutorials on the web and countless books that teach you. A lot goes into a website, being able to put one together is only part of it.

Sometimes, it can be handy to have a web person make you one or two bare bones pages, and get them on the web for you.

Then you can tinker on them.

It's nice to have a software program of sorts to do the changes.

querkyquircus's idea of a class is good.

I'm even considering taking one, even though I already tinker on my own site.

Thanks so much for all the advice and information grandad, toogreen, farmerdilla and wayne. It sounds easy indeed, now I wonder why we did not try this before. In the worst heat of the summer, only the okra looked good last year. I cannot believe that plant, flowering when it is 107 F!!!! crazy plant (I love it). This year we are adding cow peas and sweet potatoes to the hot weather vegetable clan. Why not? might as well take advantage of what grows well here and now. We cannot grow parsnips or cherries, so we might as well grow sweet potatoes. We have several roots (tubers?) starting, I only showed one, but we have white sweet potato and red sweet potatoes. They have different types of leaves, as shown in Farmerdilla's picture. Farmerdilla, your picture is nice, thanks for posting it. We might do a bed just like that, still have a few recycled pieces of lumber to use for garden beds. I think that 500 slips is a bit much for us, we might do from 12 to 20 slips. Since each averages about 6 sweet potatoes, this should give us plenty for feeding two not too large people. Besides, we are also growing other 'starchy' root crops, regular potatoes (to be harvested soon), jerusalem artichokes, chayote (the root is edible) and some weird tropical ones (elephant ears types). I take it that the level of development shown in the pictures I posted is just about right for taking the slips? not too large but large enough? or perhaps they could be 'harvested' as slips a little younger? We still have them in water but we will plant them in the ground, or in pots, this coming weekend.

I upload pictures to a folder on a friend's web server, and use the same html link to his folder, instead of a photo-hosting website. Claire over on the New England Gardening forum uses Tinypic. According to her, the advantage of TinyPic.com is that it's very easy to upload one photo and link to it, and you don't have to set up an account. The disadvantage is that you can only upload one photo at a time, which is not useful if you want to show many photos. Claire's instructions for using Tinypic.com: 1. The photo files on your computer must be in a format such as jpeg or jpg. 2. Using Tiny Pic, you hit the "Choose File" button and it searches your computer desktop. 3. Choose one then select a size ("Resize" button), and then UPLOAD NOW. 4. When the file is uploaded, copy the HTML tag, not the IMG tag. 5. Paste the HTML tag in your post. How hard is it to do your own harwood flooring?

My husband and I installed a floating wood floor in our house -- about 1000 square feet. Yes, it took a long time, but it was actually not very difficult. Just time consuming, especially with having to fit it in on the weekends and evenings. We had friends who did a floating laminate floor, and they also had no difficulty. Really, once you've laid a few rows, it becomes pretty mindless. Just make sure you do a lot of reading beforehand, and do the required prepwork. I would imagine doing a glue down or nailed floor would be rather more difficult. I don't know what option is best for a radiant heat floor -- you will need to do some research on it. My husband and I have done a lot of tile in our house as well -- the front entranceway (slate; I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. We didn't do as good of a job as we should have), a bathroom floor (easy), and the bonus room floor (400 sq feet. Time consuming, but again, not difficult). We bought a cheap wet tile saw at Lowes, and have used it every time we've tiled. It's held up surprisingly well, considering it cost less than $100. I'll be frank and honest (and I'm sure some of the contractors on this board won't like hearing this), but we've had better work done when we've done it ourselves. Nearly every contractor we've worked with has done a shoddy job; they were not detail oriented, cut corners, and generally did just sloppy work. And these were people that we investigated fully, got references, etc. and we never went with the cheapest option. We've decided that we would much rather do whatever work possible when we can, because a) it's cheaper, and b) we can do it to our specifications. If you are detail oriented yourself, do the proper research, and follow instructions, there's no reason you can't do the work yourself -- frankly, it's not rocket science.* My husband and I are computer programmers, and we bought our first house 5 years ago, which give you an idea of how much home renovation experience we have (until we bought our house, none!) * The exception being electrical or plumbing work. Thanks, I don't have a site yet, all I am doing is building it to then push a button to publish it. Don't understand a bit of it but am trying. Maybe once it is published all that will show up. However how do I know where to put spaces and buttons like you do on sites you buy from. Also I have tried ebay and stuff gets buried there. I have sold a few things this past month first time in 80 zillion tries. Maybe its where I listed it or because of xmas coming up. I hate it though you never get what its worth when I sell it out in the public. I cannot keep my stuff at shows but they want to buy it after the auction when they didn't bid or missed it. I tell them at my regular price and they act offended. Does this happen all the time. People wanting it for what you started the bid at. If I put the price on it that I do sell them at it just sits there, if not I get about half. How do people do that start at 1.00 and get 50 for a 10 dollar item. I cannot risk that at all. We design build and handpaint childrens furniture and have worked hard at it for 17 years to be unique. I also find that once i email a photo I never hear from them again. Guess its for copying which I do have copyright on it. It is unusual shapped and painted. Very girly. Thanks, connie

What kind of items are you wanting to sell? And how? Are you wanting to set up a sort of online store, or do you just want a simple page with a list of items on it?

The reality is, there are many free content management systems (CMSs) out there that don't require a lick of HTML knowledge (or only very basic HTML). These CMSs would make it so that you could add content to your site (images, store items, news, etc) without knowing HTML -- it would be a simple matter of filling out online forms. What a site like this DOES require is a database, and a certain type of knowledge on how to set up that kind of site. It's great for people who need a site right now, who don't want to learn HTML, and who are willing to pay money for someone else to set up the CMS. In addition, the content is all dynamic -- meaning, changes to the site are instantaneous. Sites that are run by HTML alone require you to upload the changes to your server every time you make a change; this can be cumbersome and time-consuming.

If time is no issue to you, and you want to learn HTML, then go for it. It may not necessarily be the right solution for what you want to do, though, if you're wanting a complicated shopping cart program or anything like that (that can't be done with HTML alone, and will require much more complicated programming knowledge). If you need a shopping cart program, or something right away, or simply don't want to learn HTML, then you would do better to hire someone to set up a CMS for you.
