What other browsers do you use to check your pages?

Internet Explorer is my normal browser and I also downloaded a copy of Netscape, just to see what my html pages look like in it. What other browsers are common enough that I should check my html code on them?

Firefox has far more users than Netscape (though the new Netscape is based on Firefox), so I would definitely suggest checking how code displays on it.

IE handles much code abnormally, so it is great you are checking with other browsers that are far more WWW3 compliant.

I don't check with a browser - I check with software that will tell me if the page has non-compliant HTML.

If it passes the test, it's W3.org compliant and if there are browser problems, it'a the browser's problem, not mine.

Used to use notepad here but I have found webbuilder 2006 to be a great programmers tool simply for its ability to show me instantly through my local dev sever the product I am making, whether that be xhtml or server side scripting. It also is great for having line numbers and color codes in the code which makes tracking down errors a breeze. It has full CSS/CSS2 support as well, with full tracking of requireds, includes, classes, fucntions, and variables.

I've used the Sunday paper insert places. Don't have need for a check printer anymore though. I last got them from the bank and will reorder through there if I need more, but I'm sure I won't. My last box cost about $4 for shipping and no charge for printing. Actually I got two boxes for that price since they goofed and started the checks at 1000 rather than 10000 as I ordered so I got the reprint free of course and the bank manager said to keep (and use if I want) the "error" checks. Which I did and will if I need more. I had to take a look at the last checks written in about the last year. Two to the plumber last September. One to the guy who shoveled for me this past winter and 3 medical bills that weren't set up yet in the electronic payment. I'll probably have checks left for my estate to use.

This interesting topic led me to do some looking around for more information. I learned that what I'd always thought of as the "machine readable" bank routing and account numbers at the bottom of the check came into use in the late 1950s. This system is called MICR, micro ink character recognition. Magnetic readers were all that was available at that time for this task so the numbers were printed on checks with magnetic ink. Reading that reminded me of yesteryear when returned checks had that the check amount printed at the bottom right of the check. This was presumably added by a machine operated manually by a bank employee actually reading the check. The banks and clearing houses then used mag reader machines (as described before in use at retailers) to process checks. Anyway, turn to today. It's not exactly as gardengirl described. The Check Clearing Act for the 21st Century, a federal law passed in 2003, provides that an image of a check IS a legal check and that the physical original check need not be passed through the system at all if an image is used in its place. That's why you can deposit a check using a smart phone or scanner, and why the bank doesn't return cancelled checks but rather makes an image available to a customer (readily obtained online). Bank records (also available online) can be used in place of actual checks for legal and tax purposes. When a bank receives a physical check as a deposit, it takes an image of the check (as well as the deposit slip, if the deposit took place in person) and destroys the pieces of paper. These images are what's available to see online when you access your account. So, to TG's information - stores using MICR readers are using technology that's over 50 years old. Checks DO NOT need to have magnetically readable ink. Yes, they're doing that to cut down on check handling but it's not their only alternative. Apple and Android Pay, other proximity (non-contact) cards are also available for use. Optical readers with OCR capability can also be used, just like every smart phone can do with a bank app. It will get to a point when retailers and other businesses won't accept checks.

I check IE, Firefox and Opera.

lazygardens, what validation software do you use?

I recently had occasion to make a reservation on the Hilton Hotel web site. Neither Firefox nor Opera worked - had to use IE. Annoying!

I wondered about Netscape - when I downloaded it it made it sound like it included a couple of other browsers that I've heard mentioned.

Spewey, what sort of things does IE handle abnormally? Just curious. So far, I haven't done anything fancier than tables, so probably any browser can handle them, but since I'm not just doing it for myself I'm a little paranoid. I'll download Opera and Firefox too. And it would be fine to check for W3 compliance, although I want everyone to be able to see the site, as I said it isn't my personal site. I think the W3 website had a compliance checker on it, too.

I use firefox (love it!) and double check on IE.
I don't have netscape installed (I really hate it!!) so I can't tell you about netscape however I can say that spewey is right and that IE handles some html coding poorly. I have had problems with picture resizing (my fault). Firefox sizes larger photos to fit on the screen. IE doesn't do this. Sometimes I forget this and check my page and end up with this huge photo.
So I have to go back to photoshop and resize it so it doesn't fall off the screen in IE.
Other problems I have seen have to do with formatting. I will double check my code and it appears fine however IE doesn't seem to handle it like firefox.
I guess I should just start developing using IE and that would save me a step!

I , and maybe an increasing number of folks, no longer even run Windows or MacOS or IE or Safari....I have 2 Macs running OSX.3 and Debian, a Powerbook running just OSX, and two pc's, only one of which even has M$Windows installed, and that has had IE and Outlook and Outlook Express stripped from the OS (spare me the "you can't do that" blah blah blah, of course you can, there is even commercially available software that lets you do it).

Better to insure standards compliance than to worry about a world full of Windows and Gates. And a shrinking world it is becoming too.

Opera is a better browser than the other three, IMHO anyway

Since we are trying to communicate, it is important what the viewer sees. I use IE6 and Firefox. That covers practically everybody. I have Mozilla and find it interesting that is shows web pages a little differently than Firefox.

Staying away from flash and active-x will make the web page accessable to more people too. I use java-script but only as much as necessary.
