Wanting a Web site

I'd like to get my own Web site. A friend recommended 'Register.com' for a good starting place. I tried their free web site builder (try before you buy!) and it came out somewhat OK but the pictures that I uploaded to "my pretend site" were fuzzy looking. They were in the .jpeg format. The pictures were of candy bar wrappers that I design and would like to sell on the internet. Do you think I'm doing something wrong, as far as the pictures go or do you think they will be clearer on the actual site. The printed wrappers are very sharp and clear.

Is there a better place to get a domain name and web site for a real beginner?

Hi Steve. I like Frontpage but a long time ago I played with this program and found it very good and best of all it's free so you might want to check it out - webomatic.

Does your ISP give you free web space? If so you can create your page with any program you like and them use ftp to upload it. A friend used her free space and then registered a domain name through Yahoo for $15 a year US.

Try sharpening your pictures before you put them on your site - also if you resize once they are on the page they will lose quality so try to get the photos of the best quality but as small a size as you can before putting them on your page.

First off jpeg is a lossy file format. What this means is every time you save the image you lose a few bytes. Over many saves and conversions you end up with an image that is not very good. Be sure to save original jpegs on a cd that can't be written onto and work on copies.

If you are uploading originals that are clear on your computer but not the web site check to be sure the images are not being resized. When I put a picture on my website I can tell the browser to shrink or expand it to a different size. For example I might have a 640x480 jpeg and tell the webpage to show it as 320x240 or 1280x960 or anything else. That will make the picture not look as well. ( and most likely what your problem is ) shrink or expand the picture your self and upload an image that is the proper size rather than doing it in html.

As for feeling guilty, keeping fish is no different than a cat or dog. Most fish are farm raised. Very few are wild caught. "Most" fish sold now are hybrids and are a little more colorful than their wild cousins. Also, in a properly maintained and established tank, the fish usually outlive the wild ones. A far as low maintainance, it depends on your water chemistry and quality. Not meaning your tap water is safe to drink and has no bacteria, just pH,nutrients and hardness. For example tap water that is hard and higher in pH is going to be more work for the fish that require a more acidic environment, also the type of plants that will do well in it. This can be reversed for acidic water for the needs of hard water fish. Any way you can save alot of money by building your own tankstand. They usually cost as much as an aquarium kit. For live planted tanks with the "red" plants you like (my favorite also), you need a high amount of light. A few plants do well in the low light that is usually provided in "complete" kits. I can go on and on (I normally do), so I'll post a few sites for you that I found usefull. This first is all around the best IMO. P.S. Goldfish only become a problem if the tank and filtration isn't sufficient. A bowl is way too small for them. When they grow they emit more ammonia and poison them selfs. I wondered how many of you have your own site ? Is it worth it? Do you sell from your web site? Which of the free web site have you found the most business on? For me is has been Local Harvest I have had lots of emails and call with new customers who found us through them, (does anyone do business on there store?). I do have my farm on the web. I felt that it was an important tool for my customers, be they CSA subscribers or shoppers at Farmer's market. I can hand anyone a business card with a web address, and if they want to know more or wish to contact us, they can easily do so. I use Netfirms "free" web-hosting (actually costs about $13 per year) so, yes, it is worth it. I am also listed on LocalHarvest.org and like you, have found it to be worthwhile. We do not sell our subscriptions through Local Harvest, but get many contacts through there. We are also Certified Naturally Grown and can be found on their web site at: www.naturallygrown.org For Farmer's, a web-site is one more way to close the gap between you and your customer. My handyman, Sean Dyar “screwed” (sorry for the language) me out of $3,000. Long story but I want everyone to know. He lives in Canterbury Courts in Carrollton, TX. He is a proud dad of 3 & enjoys everyday like it is his last. He is known as Sean, the main Grunt & passed out flyers in my neighborhood. He did some smaller handyman things for me & it was great. Then he suggested I paint the exterior of my house. I took his advice & paid him $1500 to start. Then he complained that he needed Hernia surgery & bc he was a friend now & met my children, I felt sorry for him & paid him the entire $3000 he quoted for the job. I have waiting since April 2021. His Fiancé, Beverly even called me (no caller ID) & asked if he & I were having “relations” bc she couldn’t believe I paid him in advance for the job. (Never, never). I was not interested in him that way. NEVER.......Yuck. Shame on me for being a nice person trying to help their fellow man. Because I paid him “cash”, I have no way to retaliate or sue him. Super stupid on my part, I know so.... I just don’t want anyone else to be taken advantage of like he “screwed” me. TMI & I shouldn’t post, but I have to bc he took advantage of me in such a bad way, I have to do something...... What comes around, goes a around. He will receive his in another way. Hi Connie, I'm no expert on this, but I am in somewhat the same situation as you are. I have a website tht I paid someone to design for me. They registered the domain name that I wanted. I, also, need to make frequent changes, but when I asked the designer about this, she said that I would have to go through her each time. I found that unacceptable, so I decided I'd better learn how to do it myself. My ISP, Earthlink, gives me some free web space, so I figured I'd use that to practice and, when I got it down, I'd tackle the paid site. However, on the free space, they assign you the address, you don't pick it. Mine is http://earthlink.net/~johnson29/. Yours would probably be something like http://aol.com/~sprtn185/. To get SpoiltRottn.com, you would have to register that domain. You will have to pay to register, and for someone to host your site. Prices for this vary. Do a Google search for web hosting, or domain registration, and I'm sure you'll find quite a few. I use Netscape Page Composer to create the pages. It's easy to use, and free. I then use WS-FTP to upload the pages to the web site. WS-FTP is also free, and they have a tut on how to use it. You will, then, "fill in the blanks" on WS-FTP with the information you will get from the hosting company, and it'll be on the internet.

Steve, as Sue mentioned, maybe your isp offers webspace. Mine gives me 100mgs of space. I have used godaddy.com for several years for a domain name for only $8.95 a year. Works great and you can't beat the price! Feel free to e-mail me if I can help.
