Web hosting reviews

Can anyone suggest the best, non-biased review sites for web hosts? Or any personal experience with shared web hosts? I've been on ipowerweb but have been having major problems with them lately. The lastest problem is I can't get to cpanel and my email is being rejected - this has been going on for 5 days. I'd be fired if I couldn't get a production system up in 5 days! Needless to say I am shopping for a new host and I only have 10 days before my annual renewal with them.

Any help is appreciated.

I've been with westhost for 10 years and have nothing but good things to say about them and their support. I think those ratings icons are silly and I wouldn't go by that. Anybody can make an image or say they are rated #1.

RE: Web hosting reviews

choosing a good web host can be a daunting task for any webmaster.

If you are running high volume sites, it basically boils down to money, their hardware infrastructure, bandwidth, and alot of trial and error.

Please note that most economy hosts are someone who is renting a single server anbd selling host accounts on it and will not be good for high volume commercial/production sites, but might be fine for the hobbiest or low volume community.

That said, I have made alot of bad choices without knowing any better, and since we have used Schlunde.de's USA arm, 1and1.com ... one of the worlds largest hosts with clustered and secure infrastructure with lots of bandwidth to serve large volume sites. THey cost a little more but to me it is worth it.

Afraid I can't be much help with specifics, since it's been a long time since I've leased shared space -- I lease a dedicated server instead, which is its own headache as far as finding a reliable host, etc. But, one suggestion I have is that you check out webhostingtalk.com and read the forums there (and better yet, do a search if you have a specific host or two in mind). It can be eye-opening.

RE: Web hosting reviews

Well it's been 8 days now and email is still down, cpanel and my website are bouncing up and down. They claim they are doing a cpanel upgrade but I have my doubts.

I am just hosting a personnal website, it's just for fun so I can dapple with the coding. My only requirements are PHP, CGI and MySQL - just the basics for now. I really don't need much bandwidth and if I was diligent about maintaining my files I won't need much space so a dedicated server is really overkill. I'd be willing to pay more for decent tech support though. I'm wondering if I should go with a smaller host rather than one of the big names since it is not for business, more personal service perhaps?

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check out westhost and 1and1.com. I have been reading some on webhostingtalk which has helped me some.

The frustration continues .....

RE: Web hosting reviews

If you want a nice cheap little web host, you can try one of the ones I used to use: http://onehost.ws/.

They were too small for my needs, but they were inexpensive, decent support, always addressed issues in a timely manner, and the speeds were pretty decent. They have packages starting at $1.90 a month up to $4.90 a month.

I use Laughing Squid. I NEED reliable service 24/7. I just bought three new .orgs and they'll all go on Squid.

With hosting you get what you pay for, I don't want ads and I want stats. Laughing Squid gives great Webalizer stats with a Plone interface for working directly from uploaded files. Sweet.

RE: Web hosting reviews

hey guys, if you're looking for good web hosting review drop by http://www.top5-webhosting.com

It divides hosting into linux and windows hosting so that you can easily search for PHP or ASP.NET hosting.

Another great thing is, it only gives you web hosting that provides multiple site hosting, 100GB+ disk space and 1000GB/month bandwidth for both Windows and Linux Hosting.

^^^SPAM^^^

Don't listen to "Kelvin" -- the "reviews" on their site are written only by them, not by other users, and they get a kickback for every visitor that they send onto the hosting site. They're not even real reviews, either, just summaries of services. Real reviews tell you how fast a network is, how reliable their data center is, how good their support center is, etc.

Check out hostgator.com

Reasonable prices and excellent service

RE: Web hosting reviews

My site is hosted at FutureQuest.com. Consistently excellent 24/7 service. When I missed the deadline to renew this year, I sent an email on Sunday afternoon and received a personal reply within an hour

RE: Web hosting reviews

To tell you the truth - i don't get what people need else...

RE: Web hosting reviews

There is Always a catch with something "FREE"! Could be advertisements added to your photos when you post them on the internet or bandwidth limits that make the photo disappear when the site feels your photo has been accessed enough.....and it could be both!! There is always a catch because there is a cost involved and someone has to pay it.

As far as the link posted above; It does look simple, but I sure wouldn't trust it. The poster just joined here the day they posted so looks like "Spam" to me and should be avoided.

RE: Web hosting reviews

Spam? The broken English of the post is the first clue IMO.

It's unfortunate so many people go around looking for cheap or free hosting in my opinion. Do you run around town looking for free offices for rent for your storefront? No. There's no such thing and if there were, it'd be a little condemned shack that wouldn't give your business much support or credibility. Not to mention most cheap hosts have hidden expenses for standard business requirements like charging an extra monthly fee for a unique ip address and an additional monthly fee for phone support. Already by that point it's usually cheaper to have gone with what seemed like the expensive host to begin with.

There are a lot of good hosts out there but the trouble that no one can really help you with is finding one that works with you the way that works best for you and your business. I tend to favor the medium sized hosts and stay away from the large hosts that try to cater to everyone and offer cheap bulk hosting.

RE: Web hosting reviews

Phil, you brought up some very good points. Picking a web site host depends on alot of things icluding what you need it for, how much you know about building your web pages (design/coding etc.) is there bandwidth limits and what type of files you can upload to your site. They all vary and need to be considered. Never go cheap, stay away from free and read the "small print".

As far as the poster above, first I noticed the name and then the broken english was a dead give away. When you check their My Page they joined the day they posted and their location. All red flags for me! I wouldn't trust that site at all. Just my opinion.

End of quote.

I see them all over the internet. But don't they cater to larger business. What about the little guy like me who's just enjoying dabbling online?
I've been looking into these guy's below. Any thoughts?

RE: Web hosting reviews

whansen, I didn't read their whole intro, but they might be a place to consider. First of all have you thought about checking into your ISP? Most of them include webspace for their customers. What ever you decide besure to keep a backup of all your files and if you want to change sites then you would just have to upload them to a new site. If you don't know html then learn as much as you can even if the site you choose provides templets because you will have to make changes if you move your pages to another site. I personal perfer coding my own so I have full control, but thats not what everyone wants to do.

Good luck!
