Love to haggle with merchants and get the price down on anything I buy. I take it as a compliment when someone takes one of our pics but I do want credit for them. I'll answer part of your question by saying that RW DVDs become less reliable over time as you write over them. Since I presume these are important files that you want to save, rather than change all the time, go with regular, name brand, good quality, single use DVDs...they're cheap. One DVD typically holds about 4.7 GB, and I presume that you will be prompted if you need more discs, but I don't know exactly how this works as I backup on an external hard drive. You might wish to consider that option as you can get a good, large hard drive for under $80 and it will do all of this automatically for you.

carbonite is a legit company and is a good back up option, if you go through Kim Komando's site you can get a discounted price for carbonite which is one of her sponsors. It is most often used as a full back up option to back up everything you have of value on your pc. Which everyone should have some type of back up plan in existence. If you only want to back up pictures there are many ways to do that, including putting them on cd's, or a separate external hard drive, or you can use an online storage facility and keep copies there. Adrive for example provides a very large free space to store files, I use it. what windows operating system are you using? and what browser?
