Links from an undesirable site

I don't know any where else to post this. I need some guidance as this is something I have not encountered previously.

I maintain some sites for our local community. An individual has set up a site to sell advertising space to area merchants.

However, he's linking to our Community sites such as our blog and farmer's market sites which I built and host for the community. And, he's using the name of our local Business Association on his site implying this site is sponsored by the Association.

Plus, he's using direct wording taken from text on our sites in his copy.

His site is not IMHO tastefully done. And, we are concerned about his potentially tarnishing our image in the community.

Legally, I don't know if we can do anything about linking to our sites.

Any suggestions on how we should deal with this sticky issue would be appreciated.

I see the word "community" has become a hyperlink for Kohls.
I did not intentionally place a link there. Is this something GW is doing these days?

The first thing I would do is find out who is hosting his website and contact them directly about your concerns. I would also contact him and ask nicely but firmly to remove the content and links from his website. Then I would place an "Attention" notice on your website that there is a website referring to yours and that unless it is otherwise stated directly from you, your site and its sister sites are not in any way connected to or supportive of any other site. I wouldn't mention the name of his site because it just might drive people to it out of curiosity.

As far as the hyperlink you asked about in your post; That Home Site has added a new type of advertising by selecting "key" words to use as links for adds. You can stop them by going to the Computer Help forum and on the top there is an "Opt Out" and you won't see them anymore, but new people coming here will. Guess its just a sign of the times so this site can make more money and atleast they did give us an opt out.

Glad you enjoyed. I watched the 2008 video this morning and saw 2 ants crawling up the stem of a spuria. Fell in love with a 'blue' and yellow spuria ~~ too bad there aren't captions but looking at their pics I think I know which it is.

wow this was flashback moment LOL till I realized it was from last June. unfortunately that link I provided as the linker site no longer is there, I don't know why or what happened but now it is some advertisement portal. I do like the firefox add-on mentioned, it is absolutely one of my all time fave add-ons and gets used many times a day there are a few other firefox add-ons that can help do links. One is Colt CoLT 2.4.3 what I like about Colt is that if you are on forums that require BB code it also gives the option to copy the link as BB code as well as HTML. With Copy as Html Link add-on you can go to a webpage and hilight any single word or group of words on the page then right click on them and from the menu select copy as html link and when you paste it in your reply just the words you selected will show up as the clickable link, so if you go to a page about socks for example and you just find the word socks on the page, hilight the word, right click, choose the copy as html option, and paste it all you see is socks which is blue and clickable. Very cool add-on.

To use picasa, once you have on your screen the photo you want to use, go to the right and click "link to this photo". You can choose the size of the photo as well as your privacy level. Then it spits out some HTML for link to or embed. Copy the stuff in the embed box. Then stick that into a post. I'm old school and use (img src=whateverthatstuffintheboxwas) using the pointy carets (sp?) instead of parentheses.

the very easiest method is if you use firefox get the add on called Copy as HTML link, once you have that great little add on installed you can simply hilight any word or phrase on any page and then right click on that and choose from the list Copy as HTML link, it adds all the proper tags to it and then you just paste that right into your reply here or where ever you wanted to use it and voila it is a click-able link. This is an example, I am going to provide the link to that add on using that add on to create the link. Copy as HTML Link I have turned on so many people to that super easy time saving add on, everyone loves it.

I agree that communicating with the person is best.

However, if they refuse to quit linking to your site and your server handles PHP, you can let your server handle it for you.

For example, say someone on badsite, no longer a friend is posting links to your site and you'd like to make it a bit tougher on them... try something like this:

Make sure you page ends in ".php" and add a line such as...

<?php if ( strpos( $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'], "badsite.com" ) ) header( "Location: http://badsite.com";) ; ?>

at the very top. That way any traffic arriving by way of a link posted anywhere on badsite.com simply gets redirected right back to badsite.com. They never see your page if they're coming from badsite. Traffic arriving from anywhere else still sees the usual page.

I realize the post is ancient... but I'm bored and maybe it will be useful to someone?

It was short lived. In fact, at one point later on he was going to "give" me the domain, but never did.

Time heals a lot of problems.
