Build for Purpose. Seek traffic from ads - not the internet

For two years, I've had a page posted about how our site reached top ranking in two years, but even it suggests building a site that is provides benefits rather than placing ranking as a priority.

Too many companies doing local business underestimate websites. One clue of that is placing a website address in small letters or at the bottom of a business card. The full explanation is at...

Don't focus on traffic from the internet - work on the other ways to get traffic

You're absolutely right and I get such a kick out of seeing TV commercials where they flash a website for a second in the tiniest size letters. Many businesses with heavy competition on the interenet can't expect to stay in business solely from search engines and online ads. You have to draw people to the site with other forms of advertising.

(forgot to mention that that page is not the ranking page I mentioned)

Hi Quirky !!

I was probably 50% of the way to realization about the mad dash that companies make for search engine results - and I think a lot of webmasters let people remain in tha frame of mind.

Understanding the fantasy, finally "clicked" for me after moving down to southern Oregon for a while. Our address is for Jacksonville, and old mining town. So while I was reading some history about its gold rush, and looking in the museum, I also happened to have seen several History Channel shows about other gold rushes in the US like in California and Alaska.

That's what helped me to recognize that the top search engine results - at least in a big city - are limited resources, just like gold was.

Hey, we are ready to move north again, and our house is on the market - but that's one of the things I gained from this area; as well as the hiking of course (including the Bigfoot trap in the woods, 20 minutes away).

RE: Build for Purpose. Seek traffic from ads - not the internet

When I put my business on the web I never intended to get business from the web. I just did it so I can show customers product offerings, prices and to save money from printing and mailing catalogs. I advertise the site to people who already know about the business almost as if it's invitation-only.
I do get new customers from the site every once in a while and I'm happy about that. Not enough to stay afloat on that alone but it's a pleasant surprise when those customers come a-callin'.
Somebody who gets a phenomenal amount of web-only traffic is Julie from the various tree forums. (treegrowersdiary.com) She's got several sites though, they've been on the web since the late 90's I think, regularly updated and very well indexed to say the least. She does link to them on the forums too which helps, especially this one.
Since you're selling and buying, stop in to read all the drama on the gweb real estate forum.
And I hope this move doesn't mean the end of the wonderful photography on your site and the regular updates. Are you moving to Portland or Seattle?
