What software helps in created banners, buttons and other graphics that can be used to create a website? Any related freebies out there

I find that Macromedia Freehand is excellent for making buttons and banners. Mostly used for printing out brochures and flyers, it does a very good job for webpages. You do not get the jaggies that you get with a photo type program. The only problem i find is the size of the files can be larger than i want them to be.
