Here's my speculation - Internet Explorer updates automatically with Windows updates. The shortcut you have is old and points to the download and tee-ing up of superceded version older than what is now installed. You shouldn't have clicked it, but you did. It's now teed up to install the "update". It will try every time. But when the existing (newer) Explorer version already there is polled by the function trying to do this non-update update, IE says: "Stop, your update is old and unneeded". The only way to stop such a tail-chase, if my speculation is right, is to do a Restore to a date earlier than the day when you clicked on the shortcut. In the meantime, click once on the shortcut and then hit the delete key so that it doesn't happen again. System Restore, not System Recovery, will fix this. Don't do System Recovery. If you've installed any new software or updates in the intervening time since the shortcut was clicked, you'll have to repeat those steps after the Restore is done. Your data files will be unaffected.

Over a year of your time has zero value? Many people struggle with the DIY fallacy that it is too costly to pay a Pro to do an expert job quickly. Time has a value. Not always monetary. If it saved you 10K, but cost you in another way, was that tradeoff the one you imagined it to be when you are 70 and can see the years running out fast? Which would you rather have? 10K? Or more time spent with your kids when they were young? Its the same trap as "I MUST have the big house with everyone getting their own bathroom and 5 places to eat,'' No, you don't need that. You need that time you spend working overtime to save for that giant house to be spent watching your kids recital. And make them share a smaller space.

If you made the interior height higher, the roof would be even taller. And uglier. The lower plate height is what determines the living space height. It has zero to do with the roof.
