In Wall, On Wall or In Ceiling

Hello Forum-mates,

My home is being built and the builder wants to know if we want surround sound system speakers - in wall, on wall or in the ceiling.

And unfortunately, I do not have an iota of a clue about that. So please help.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

i have a home entertainment set, i surround it against the corners, - front speaker L,R - in front L,R corner , woofer - in the middle, surround speaker L,R in back upper corner L,R.

Also i would like to get your idea on creating an enclose area in the living for parental control, for children study, for noise reduction, for mood up in mid-nite movie ...etc.

Thanks for the posting - I'm wondering same thing. Hopefully, bumping this back up to top of list will get more responses.

For what it's worth, we just toured a Home Show and the new homes had in-wall speakers. Prior to that tour all I had ever seen before was in ceiling. Don't know why, hopefully others can explain...

Whether you place the speakers in-wall or in-ceiling, depends on your ear.

For optimum sound-staging and imaging, don't place speakers in the drywall (read, wal or ceiling). You require speakers into the room; florr standing or on stands.

The tweeters (high frequencies) are directional; these should point on a plane at your ears; probably around 40".
So, if in-wall, I would recommend over ceiling placement.
The subwoofer is an easier placement, for simplicity, most anywhere. You can get more bass if the sub is in a corner, and conversely, away from a corner to get less bass.

The dimensions of the room should not be a square cube; if the numbers are not multiples of each other; length/width/height, then you're off to a good start.

I do have ceiling speakers throughout my home, but these are for background listening. I do have a dedicaded room for movies, these are not installed in dry-wall or ceiling.

Which speakers for in-wall or in-ceiling? These are really hard to audition. I guess budget would dictate, but have these with a "back box" wich is a housing for the in-drywall speaker for best performance.
