Boniva side effects

One of the side effects is flu-like symptoms. Does anyone know if that happens right away, or if it can come anytime? I started Boniva on December 1; felt fine until today (chills, sore throat, aches). I had a flu shot, but I know I can still get the flu.

I just started Fosamax on Sunday am and by 2PM i was so sick to my stomach..was sick all night and Monday..Anyone else have this problem? Was on Actonel before with no problems..Linda

I refused to take Boniva because I have to be so careful about acid reflux. I have done my esophagus a lot of damage over the years and the proton pump inhibitors I have taken have contributed to my bone loss.

My rheumatologist said that I should try Evista so that's what I have done and it appears to be working. She said if that didn't do the trick I should take the IV Boniva and bypass my stomach.

We almost lost our 15 month old Cockapoo and we fear it was due to this drug 'Metacam'. We brought our dog to the vet with a slightly sore paw, nothing we were overly concerned about as he was putting weight on the foot and in good spirits. Reluctantly we agreed to our dog being given an antibiotic and an injection of Metacam (we felt this was a bit unnecessary but we trusted the vets opinion and that we were doing the best for our dog). That same day the dog was groggy and lethargic. By that same night our dog was groaning with pain so we gave him half a painkiller prescribed by the vet. The next morning our poor dog couldn't move, he lay unresponsive and couldn't lift his body weight upright. He wasn't eating or drinking a thing! If we touched any part of his body he was in severe pain. Our dog is very energetic with a great appetite and we were very worried! We returned to the vet and found our dog was running a very high temperature. The vet was adamant that this was as a result of his sore paw and possible bone infection and was very critical of the dog breed. Our dog was kept in over night and medicated with paracetamol and an IV antibiotic. Within 24hours our dog was returning to normal. The vet insisted we do an x-ray and nothing showed up. Thankfully we were able to discharge our pet after two nights but found the vet very reluctant to talk about what and how much medication he had prescribed our dog. We have no way to ever know for sure the reason our dog fell unresponsive within a couple of hours but we can't shake the feeling that it has a strong connection with the Metacam he was administered on first meeting the vet. We have also noticed our dog's weight is not correct on his medication label - it is double his weight! Finally, when leaving the vet practice with the prescribed medications, the vet had to call us back as he has prescribed double painkiller doses. The vet carried out a blood test without our knowledge and still has not disclosed the result of this blood test. When asked to discuss our concerns the vet became extremely defensive and condescending towards us. We would love to put our minds at ease and find out if any other dog owners experienced this reaction to Metacam or if it sounds like a over dosage of Metacam?

I've taken them both and some others, I'm sorry to say. An uncommon side effect of Fosamax is femur fracture (I know, it sounds crazy). However that doesn't seem uncommon to me since I did experience a femur fracture while taking Fosamax and needed surgery to remedy the situation. The femur is a difficult bone to heal w/o surgery, so after many months on crutches, I went ahead with the surgery (rod). Should have done it in the first place. The problem with these drugs is that women are afraid to take them and afraid not to take them. Also, when you are taking these drugs or any other (Forteo, Prolea, etc.)--when you find out your DEXA scan results, you feel unsure if the drugs have helped or not because you don't know what the results would have been without the drugs. It's not a happy situation. These drugs have side effects you don't want, but you don't want a broken hip either. Have the collection of drugs I've taken helped me? Will I be having bad side effects? Someone pass the crystal ball, please!

After I had surgery a couple of years ago, my sense of smell and taste were both off. Food didn't necessarily smell bad, just weird. Also, there was a faint hint of a metal taste with everything. They did tell me at the hospital this was due to the anesthesia. It went completely away after three or four days. One day in the hospital I didn't finish my bacon. They were actually very generous with the bacon that morning. I took one bite and didn't want anymore, but I did finish the rest of my food. DH had been eyeing the bacon, kind of salivating. :) I told him it didn't taste good and he could have it. He took one bite, looked disappointed, and said it really didn't taste good. We both initially thought it was just me, because, bacon!

Marlene, I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to the shot, but it does make me feel a little less of a freak. I haven't heard the shingles pain described that quite way, but my dad was a tough one and to complain about the pain was notable. Still, I assumed it was because of the open wounds on the skin. It wasn't until DH had it that we both realized the real pain is a deep nerve pain -- something unlike anything we normally experience. DH had some reoccurrence in his back and shoulder and used a TENS unit that seemed to help. The pain I had in my arm more than a week or two after the shot (when the redness and swelling had gone down) was very deep. Gave me some appreciation for what DH had been dealing with. Pudgeder, good thing you got the Shingrix when you did! Bbstx, your neighbor's experience is a scary one. My cousin's husband had it get to his eyes but not in them -- that was the first time I'd hear that shingles could cause blindness. Scary stuff.

I am going to have to take something for bone loss in the near future. Has anyone with this issue ever tried the nasal spray Miacalcin or Fortical? Supposedly these 2 avoid the possibility of jaw necrosis, which can happen with Fosamax, et al.

I have tried them all, starting with Fosamax and ending with Boniva. After about a year on each one, I would have stomach aches after every meal.I have bone loss, but it isn't worth it to be sick all the time.

The nasal sprays are next on my list if the Evista doesn't work. My rheumatologist recommended Miacalcin. Her recommendations in order are:

Evista - Miacalcin nasal spray - Actonel - Boniva - Boniva IV

I took boniva for almost a year and noticed I would get a stomach ache that lasted about 2-3 days after taking the boniva each month. It did help my osteoporosis though. I wonder if Fosamex or Actonel would have the same side effect? I don't want to have a stomach ache more often than once a month !

I had a test that showed the Evista is working. The only side effect for me is a 30 second hot flash about 45 minutes after I take it.

I'm noticing slight stomach problems after taking it, but if it helps my osteoporosis, I can live with it.

I read somewhere that Actonel can contribute to some kind of loss of bone in your JAW! Yes, loss of bone. Actonel is supposed to be good for osteoporosis/penia... but can affect the jaw.

I took Actonel for quite sometime and had lots of trouble with acid reflux (or might have had anyway, but blamed it on Actonel)... I stopped and my bone loss did not continue, but I also get lots of sun everyday (Vitamin D) and came off Nexium (which can deplete you of calcium)...

Anyway, that's my experience - I am sure Actonel affects everyone differently - but that jaw possible problem seemed scary

The Boniva can also contribute to the bone loss in the jaw. I told my hygenist about the Boniva; she put a large neon sticker on my file, and said if I ever need gum surgery, I'd have to go off the Boniva for several months before the surgery. They take this jaw bone loss very seriously.
