Ratio of Magnesium and Calcium?

I just had a bone density test on my foot amd I found out I was at "moderate" risk for osteoporosis. I am taking 1200mgs of calcium and 400 mgs of magnesium and wondered if that was enough of magnesium. I had heard that your supposed to take magnesium along with the calcium but couldn't remember just how much. I'm 62 and non-smoker. Thanks.... Mary

RE: Ratio of Magnesium and Calcium?

Mary, normally it's a 2:1 ratio, twice as much calcium as magnesium. So you would need 600 mgs of Magnesium along with 1200 mgs Calcium. You can also purchase combination Cal/Mag supplements. But read the labels, Calcium Bis-Glycinate, Citrate or Chelate are much better absorbed than Calcium Carbonate. For Magnesium, Magnesium citrate, gluconate and sulfate are the ones the body absorbs best.

RE: Ratio of Magnesium and Calcium?

Thanks for the information. I will look for the Cal/Mag supplement. I am now taking the calcium carbonate so I will need to change that! Thanks again, Mary
