cough and alternative medicine

Have any of you used any type of alternative medicine for a chronic cough? I am talking about a cough I have had for probably 30 years. I have had every test you can imagine with no real solution.

I know this might sound strange....but do you clean your ears too often? There's a nerve in your ear canal, close to the surface, and if it gets irritated by cleaning your ears too much, you can get a cough from it. It happened to me.

catherine, I've been dealing with this cough for so long, nothing sounds strange..LOL
But I don't clean my ears too often so I doubt if that would be it...thanks so much for the information, though.

My surefire no-fail cure for the common cold is the Sammich of Death: 1 heaping tablespoon each of chopped garlic, chopped ginger, and Chinese mustard (the kind made fresh at a Chinese restaurant is best). The garlic and ginger are from jars sold in the produce section at grocery stores. Put all three ingredients on a slice of bread and eat it. Your head will explode. But the explosion will clear out your sinuses, allowing you to breathe again and exposing any nasty anaerobics to oxygen. Do it again about four hours later if need be. My theory is that these ingredients make your body so unpleasant that any viruses promptly either die or leave. The only problem is that you probably don't want to be too close to anyone for awhile. For coughs (the dry, itchy kind) I find either licorice (the real stuff), horehound drops, or Pine Brothers cough drops work best for me.

We must have been posting at the same time...... Sable - he does wheeze during his coughing attack. Luckily my FIL is a doc & he has come by daily to check his lungs. That is great about your son taking care of his own meds.....shoot, I'm just trying to get this boy to remember to brush his teeth daily when he wakes up!! Golddust - he has a major sinus infection now. They did a CT scan & showed the cavities or rather not showing the maxillary cavity b/c it is so congested. Segbrown - I am glad Flonase is working for you. My DH uses that also. We are using inhalers that have the fine powder that comes out - he was having a difficult time knowing when to inhale & push the inhaler. I find myself wanting to twist & cock the inhaler for him but he has to be able to do it himself & he does. Total fluke about getting tested for allergies.....I had an appointment b/c of a rash on my arm. Asthma doc & FIL worked together many years ago so FIL tells me to take my DS with me to my appointment just to make sure he was not missing anything. So, I call to ask if I can bring my son & Dr. says yes. Well, after they did that testing on his back - my rash was never mentioned!! I am so grateful that we took him and had him tested b/c this explains so much. I am totally rambling but I really appreciate the support. Smiles:)

One thing it could be is Acid Reflux Disease. Doctors are finding out that some chronic coughs are actually caused by the stomach acid coming up and getting into the broncial area. There is seldom, if ever, any pain with this. Needless to say that antibiotics wouldn't help this at all. You might try one of the OTC medication like Pepcid or Prilosec for a couple of weeks to see if you are helped any. Even a Tum or two before bedtime might help if this is what it is.

My son has had 'hypersensitive' cough since childhood but got rid of it -for good- with acupuncture and Chinese pharmacopia, through my acupuncturist.
Of course, a healthy regimen and dust-free environment doesn't hurt!

We also have two cats (have always had at least 2 in the house) and for a long time attributed his cough to that but tests revealed no allergy to them, thank God!

clairabelle, I am so glad to hear your son got relief through an acupuncturist as that is what I was thinking of trying. My granddaughter has been going to one for female problems and has received immense relief from her problems.
Over the years, I have had every allergy test imaginable (some more than once), CT scans, esophagus xrays, scopes. They have given me, I think, every allergy med known to man to try...LOL...with no relief. When it is at its worst, I just don't go to any social function as it is embarrassing to cough and cough.
Thanks so much for sharing your son's good response to accupuncture..I think I will give it a try.

gma......do you think its possible that its a tic? I'm not discounting your problem as real, because I know it is. But sometimes we need to change our approach to things. I'm wondering, since you've had so many tests, if something like a light dose of an antidepressant might work. The brain is very, very complex.
I have this thing where I hear small sounds in the distance, and they drive me crazy. Since I've been on Zoloft, I don't notice them. Well, I notice them, but I don't go crazy from them.
Sometimes that can work on repetitive physical things too.

I and the doctors have talked about a tic and decided that was not the case. I am taking 100 mg of zoloft a day. Has the sounds you hear been diagnosed as tinnitus? I have that also.
Thanks so much for your suggestions. I really think I will try accupuncture first now and see what happens. I am an upbeat person so I don't dwell on letting these things spoil my life, but if I can find some relief, it would be such a blessing.
