Natural Remedies for Enlarged Prostate ...

I've been taking Uva Ursi for my enlarged prostate. I can only take it for 14 days though, which will be up tomorrow. So today is the last day I can take Uva Ursi. Has anyone else taken Uva Ursi? How long do you have to wait until you can take it for another 14 days?

I also have Horsetail and Hydrangea. The label for Hydrangea says "Not recommended for long-term use."

The Uva Ursi seems to have helped some. I've only needed to get up during the night to use the bathroom three, sometimes four times, and a couple nights only two times (!), instead of five or six times.

I haven't taken either the Horsetail or Hydrangea yet. Will start one of them tomrorrow ...

What does your urologist recommend? Please follow his/her recommendation. Have you considered something like Avodart? It not only treats the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, but there is some evidence (not yet clinically proven, though) that it may even postpone the onset of prostate cancer by up to FIVE years! And as you know, pretty much all men will get prostate cancer if they live long enough. That's a pretty cool side effect for a drug to have! My husband takes it and it's made a huge difference in the symptoms of enlarged prostate for him.

Sit down with your dr. and discuss both the legitimate and alternative options open to you--his advice is the best you're going to get. Don't take chances with your health by letting internet strangers prescribe for you.

I've spoken with several of my family doctors, and they are not interested in herbal remedies, say they don't know anything about them, and will not give me advice.

So, I am on my own here .... I do have a good book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," Fourth edition, by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC. This book was recommended by a friend of the family, who is a nurse, and has taken care of many in-home patients, and prescribed herbal remedies for many who have recovered from their medical issues.

I am going to take all of my herbal remedies with me the next time I see my doctor, just to let them know what I'm doing. I'm sure they will not be happy though .... And I'm sure the drug companies would also not be happy ....

I've tried many remedies over the past three years including most of the natural ones listed above, flomax, and two prostate procedures (a microwave TUMT and a 180 watt XPS Greenlight Laser enucleation) and still have most of the problems I started with. The solution to Prostate/bladder problems (also known as prostatism or LUTS - Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms - which effects about 40% of older men) must be very complex because some men get only limited relief despite the best efforts of professionals of every sort. And some women experience these same symptoms despite the fact they have no prostate! I did try the tarragon tea twice twice in the last three days. The first was the dried leaf from the standard spice jar. The second was fresh leaves removed from the stem, purchased at the super market produce section. Both were placed in a wire mesh tea ball and steeped for 20 minutes. The fresh had a better flavor and aroma. It seems to inhibit urine production in some way, but It's a bit early to judge the overall effect. I do know that I do get a bit loopy from this tea. There's a definite sedative effect, a feeling of mental slowness. If I have a drink of alcohol it seems to magnify the impairment factor while taking away the enjoyment factor of the alcohol. I find it a bit unpleasant. If there is a beneficial effect to the tea I'll probably want to drink it just before bed so I won't notice the sedative effect. Antioxidants - not a panacea?

The above-mentioned remedy I previously purchased from my massage therapist finally ran out, and for several years I failed to try antioxidants again. Finally, I recently heard a medical researcher speak on PBS about Respiridol, a red grape-derived antioxidant, as possibly having a beneficial effect on the telomeres that begin to deteriorate on the ends of older peoples' chromosomes (apparently based on research with mice, I think he said), and wandered into a local health food store in search of some. Finding Resperidol prohibitively expensive, I purchased several bottles of other fruit-based antioxidants that were on sale for the incredibly low price of $3 a bottle and have taken some several times when I was not feeling very well (I have begun Spring gardening and usually feel like a zombie for the first several weeks of resumed gardening activity). The antioxidants have made me feel better each time I have taken some. Additionally, I acquired a bottle of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) capsules at a local Indian food market, and have found that when I have onerous tasks to do that taking one 400 mg capsule gives me the energy to get the job done. Today I felt like death warmed over, but an hour after taking a capsule I was able to plant three blueberry bushes, two windflowers, three tansys, and a wormwood; move several medium-sized rocks; and begin another small spaghetti garden section by spreading out some bagged leaves and bagged composted humus. Ginseng, which I eventually read was really mainly a remedy for males, never had much of an effect on me, so I was really surprised.

Joann he's on a type of Flow-max already. He's had a ct done, aurinary tract scope, and is going in on Friday for a bladder scan. At the end of the month he'll have a colonoscopy type thing to take a biopsy of his prostate. He did tell the urlogist's nurse about his abdominal pain last wee and they requested a urine sample which he did. No word on the results, so he'll probably find out more on Friday. Today he's feeling his normal self, and just finished mowing the lawn.

I tried the natural way with Saw Palmetto for some time. I was up 3-5 times a night, partial passing, the usual symptoms I don't have to tell you. The Dr prescribed Flomax (I don't know other companies names) and I am down to once a night and fewer daily visits. Good luck! I am fortunate in having several good naturopaths locally but I have never had much luck with natural or homeopathy personally. Have you looked in your area??

Did your urologist test you for cancer? My husband had it and simple radiation took care of it. No uncomfortable side effects at all.

Most doctors know nothing about natural medicine and they will tell you that they are of no use. The real fact is that things like saw palmetto, prostene and tomatoes help as much as the drugs. Only a doctor would tell you that all men in time will get cancer. We all have cancer many times in our life and the body cures it normally. As Doctor Walburg in 1931 got a Nobel prize for showing that cancer can no live in an alkaline environment or live with oxygen present so if you keep your body alkaline you will be free of cancer
