Energy from B12 / depression

Upon my friend's suggestion, I went and purchased "Ultimate b12 sublingual" tablets. They give you an energy boost that rivals serious caffeine highs without the jitters or the crash afterwards. I suffer from depression and this has given me the energy I need just to get out of bed some days! I bought mine at Hi-Health but I am thinking any place like that would carry it.

If you are feeling the blahs or are depressed, give it a shot, you have nothing to lose by trying!

I hope this helps a lot of people, I have suffered from lack of energy due to hypothyroidism and depression for years and always feel sluggish and tired, this has helped tremendously.

I usually feel like warmed over oatmeal, but since I have been forcing myself to take the B multiple from Costo I feel fabulous. I say "force myself" because it smells so bad.

Devorah, I know, the regular ones are awful which is why I was suggesting the sublingual. You have to let it melt under your tongue, but it is an orange flavor and tastes good, sort of like a mild sweet-tart. It takes a while to melt, but it gets into your system more quickly than the tablets.

Good to hear others are having luck with B12 too!

People take B12 for energy boosts but it rarely does that to me. Sometimes I can notice a sense of healthiness the next day after taking the pill or when I sometimes do the liquid (also kept under the tongue). My doctor does very thorough blood work so I monitor the levels once or twice each year. They were having trouble getting the dosage right for my Thyroid medicine so I had to do a lot of lab tests in the course of a year so I got to double check my vitamin levels often. I was told by another doctor that sub-lingual was not as effective as injection. There is even a medical hot line where you can ask a question and they will call you back with the answer within a week (I think it is operated with Med students). I asked the question there and was told that sublingual is a third less effective, or more. But, you can take a pill every day if you need so I think it works out fine. In my case it wasn't giving myself the shot it was the amount of stuff I had to inject into the muscle that was a problem. Now all I have to do is take one pill per week. The liquid B12 is usually near the pills at the drug store, if you don't want to take a pill.

I was diagnosed with slightly low vitamin B12 several months ago, after having a weird burning-tongue feeling on and off for a few months. (Yeah, that's one of the weirder symptoms.) I don't remember what specifically my numbers were, but it was just barely under the borderline, so it wasn't a real significant deficiency. I think I've been taking 1000 mcg (too lazy to get up and look!). Within a few months my level was back in the normal range but I still take it most days. I wish I could say the supplement gave me lots of energy and a better memory, but I don't think it has! Maybe I'd notice more if perimenopause wasn't messing with my body so much.

Yes! And we too still have some odds and ends to finish, some stuff to change (e.g might swap locations of one DR hi-hat with the ceiling fan between the DR and kitchen which will entail a fresh round of spackling/painting, oh joy!) and some things that aren't working 100% (some I'll live with, but will be irked by just the same, and some I'm anxiously awaiting replacement or tweaking). I've got a ton of nail holes to fill in other rooms, but somewhat reno-related, so if you're on a roll brunosonio, would you mind stopping by here, too? lol! Like jodi, some of the moments I've treasured in my life, have been the weekend jaunts with my DH that were involved with any of our house projects. With DH in grad school these past few years (while working full-time), and every spare minute (including weekends), devoted to schoolwork, the trips with him to the appliance stores, hardware design store, and tile store were occasions worth savoring all the more. Luckily he only has one more semester to go, and we will be planning our (3!) bathrooms renovations for 2008. I guess that will get the GW juices flowing again, too! It's hard to leave this forum though (I've been lurking over in baths, trying to get the mental ball rolling!), but I've not posted in the FKB yet, so I do have an excuse of sorts!

Very little sunshine in my zone 5a, Chicagoland. I take Brewer's yeast, high in all B-vitamins, except for B-12. I get plenty of B-12 through eating meat though. Lab tests came back for my 12-year-old daughter, it's hormonal imbalances ... she was depressed but now much better with high-dose of fish-oil & vitamin D & B-vitamins. Few people realize that vitamin D is fat-soluble, and vitamin D is a hormone. We use liquid fish oil, it's the form that's documented to help with lipid panels & depression. The capsule ones don't get dissolve, esp. the hard-shell enteric-coated. I once soaked fish-oil capsules in vinegar for hours .. they won't dissolve. I had to poke the hard shell with a sharp knife to sniff the fish-oil inside, to see if it's fresh. Folks reported seeing fish-oil capsules floating in their toilets, not dissolved by stomach acid.

Thanks! I too have felt like I want to do nothing, absolutely nothing. I have asked myself why I am soooo lazy. I'm going to try the B12

A B12 deficiency is a very real problem for a lot of people. The blood test for it is fairly expensive, so a lot of doctors just suggest taking it (or getting the injections.) If it helps, then it probably was a B12 deficiency.

I found that the sublingual pills were not enough. I ended up getting the injections, which I now give to myself, saving tons of money. A long term definciency usually becomes noticeable when the toes and fingers start to have odd sensations. B12 pills that are swallowed, usually don't do much good as the problem is cause by a lack of certain factions in the stomach digestive system. The sublingual pills and the injections bypass the stomach and go directly to the blood.
