What plants naturally have Omega-3 fatty acids?
Comments (11)Plants contain ALA omega 3s (not all, but things like flax/soybean/canola)... Fish (some more then others) contain DHA/EPA... The "good" stuff is the DHA/EPA (they are different but the body can convert them back and forth). The body can also convert ALA to DHA/EPA but the conversion process is inefficient (doesn't yield much by my research). It also seems that grass fed meat contains DHA/EPA, but i haven't researched it enough to know how much. Also be aware that fish do not make the DHA/EPA, but get them from the things they eat (in the end, i believe it comes from algae of some sort). Just remember your brain is made up of mostly DHA, so i guess that would be another good source :). Fats in general are hard to figure out, with omega 3/6/9 saturated/unsaturated/poly/mono...and the next "big" thing may be CLA (google it), also found in grass fed dairy products. I just incorporate as much plant based materials into my diet and throw in some meat/dairy/whole grains...i try to limit sugars/refined grains. Of course dark chocolate is my weakness! I believe there is work being done to have GM grain (soybean?) that can make its own DHA. I'm very anti GM crop, but the alternative is continued reliance on fish stocks. Another possibility is going right to the source, and growing your own algae, which i know at least one company is doing. Probably our best bet, for humans and the environment. If you are pregnant, or have a young baby, research DHA and you might want to incorporate that into your/their diet. The findings seem pretty positive. I know my wife took DHA supplements when pregnant and that was years ago before i knew what it was....See MoreMandrin1~ Close up of what Rosemarie Oil has done for my plants!
Comments (21)Hi Beth. Welcome! I use Fish Emulsion as soon as I can get my plants outside as a preventative on any possible sucking insect and it works for me. I spray with it at least once a month now and more so before I bring them in for the winter. I have no pest issues with the trees I treat except for mites after a long period indoors if the winter is extremely dry and cold, which it has been. Too, I forget to treat a plant or two before bringing them in such as my Olive Tree because I left it out way beyond my other plants and it will get attacked by mites which can spread to surrounding plants. At least every other pest that seems to attack many others trees such as Mealy, Thrips, and Scale are not a problem at all and I thank the Fish Emulsion for this. Now that I can't spray with F.E in my home, I have to watch for mites at least since especially towards the end of winter. Now I have been using Rosemary Oil because they are indoors, and the stuff smells good too and it has done wonders for my trees. Not a one mite damaged leaf to be found after a month on any of my plants and just because I don't seem to have a problem anymore, I'll treat again once a month until I can stick them outside again to be safe. Then once outside, I'll start using Fish Emulsion again. :-) Mike...See MoreCanned Tuna- mercury, additives, omega-3 and labels
Comments (1)Thanks. I've read that the light tuna instead of the white has less mercury. Also the wild caught Alaskan salmon has less mercury. It's a sad state of affairs, isn't it?...See More11/5/15: protein, Omega-3 for roses & us, what work for your health?
Comments (46)Before leaving for the new post... Maybe I collect stray cats - have 9 ...and roses... can't have any beautiful objects like yours - especially not vases...the cats climb on everything and then whatever is there falls down and breaks... :-) but I love blue (cobalt especially) vases and bottles, and Jim, I adore those Gijoe doll-statues... they are so well made, perfectly rounded of, with so much attention to detail... I have never seen them. we only have Barbie and Ken dolls here... my brother used to collect Matchbox cars... I never had anything that special... except my cats and my roses... yes Carol... how sad what mankind does to nature... horrific.... I am going to delete the post with the elephant photo's until I've contacted my friends to ask their permission to post it permanently :-) so glad you liked seeing that.... please spread the news - stop purchasing ivory... the sad thing is, when you think about it - all the keys in a piano are made with ivory, that such a beautiful creature had to die to create such beautiful music..ironic isn't it? all for man's pleasure.......See Moretrianglejohn
