What plants naturally have Omega-3 fatty acids?
Comments (11)Plants contain ALA omega 3s (not all, but things like flax/soybean/canola)... Fish (some more then others) contain DHA/EPA... The "good" stuff is the DHA/EPA (they are different but the body can convert them back and forth). The body can also convert ALA to DHA/EPA but the conversion process is inefficient (doesn't yield much by my research). It also seems that grass fed meat contains DHA/EPA, but i haven't researched it enough to know how much. Also be aware that fish do not make the DHA/EPA, but get them from the things they eat (in the end, i believe it comes from algae of some sort). Just remember your brain is made up of mostly DHA, so i guess that would be another good source :). Fats in general are hard to figure out, with omega 3/6/9 saturated/unsaturated/poly/mono...and the next "big" thing may be CLA (google it), also found in grass fed dairy products. I just incorporate as much plant based materials into my diet and throw in some meat/dairy/whole grains...i try to limit sugars/refined grains. Of course dark chocolate is my weakness! I believe there is work being done to have GM grain (soybean?) that can make its own DHA. I'm very anti GM crop, but the alternative is continued reliance on fish stocks. Another possibility is going right to the source, and growing your own algae, which i know at least one company is doing. Probably our best bet, for humans and the environment. If you are pregnant, or have a young baby, research DHA and you might want to incorporate that into your/their diet. The findings seem pretty positive. I know my wife took DHA supplements when pregnant and that was years ago before i knew what it was....See MoreRegarding Fish Oil . . .
Comments (18)Just because it was on the news doesn't mean I believe it. As noted here - and in the other thread where fish oil was mentioned - changes have been noted. Our internist mentioned it some time ago because my husband's cholesterol has hovered very near the 200 mark a few times. We've made dietary and exercise changes. Both his parents have high cholesterol. His mother's side several siblings have had strokes, so of course it is a concern. But, I am so thankful to have a doctor that is not quick to push a pill. The Omega 3's can have an impact on cholesterol. Thanks Shee - I'm going to read up on the differences/benefits of the three mentioned and if there is not a significant loss of benefit to the one Boop linked, I think I would like to try that. I'm glad to know though that the one you are using has not caused problems....See MoreOmega 3 Fish Oil Tablets
Comments (1)Hmm. Several things aren't quite jiving here, and there are a couple of red flags. I know you didn't ask about anything but the fish oil, so I'll answer that first, but I would feel remiss in not addressing my other concerns, as well. Fish oil is a great supplement for cats and dogs and can help improve coat quality, as well as support the cardiovascular system. I puncture a softgel and squeeze 3-4 drops of fish oil on each of my cat's breakfasts every other day. The bigger issue, though, most likely relates to your cat's diet and/or state of health. C/D is not a kidney diet. It is formulated to prevent the formation of urinary struvite crystals. K/D is the kidney diet. Both diets are loaded with useless carbs that are not doing your cat a bit of nutritional good. If you want to improve coat and overall health, consider switching to a high quality canned food, or at the least to a low-carb dry food like Innova Evo or Wellness Core. Dandruff is common in obese or older, arthritic cats who cannot groom properly. It is also common during the dry winter months (a humidifier can help in this case). It may also be symptomatic of disease. What concerns me about your description is that your cat is somewhat skinny, has a dry, dull coat (which may indicate dehydration), is drinking a lot of water (which may also indicate dehydration), and has a history of renal problems. When was the last time you had a full blood chemistry run on him? Have you had his thyroid checked? If you haven't had these things done within the last 3 mos, I strongly recommend you do them now. Fish oil isn't going to fix renal failure or hyperthyroidism. If your cat is dealing with one or both of those disease processes (or any other disease), the sooner you know about it, the more likely you'll be able to manage his condition satisfactorily. I wish you and your boy all the best. Laurie...See MoreRU roses planted & other stuff...
Comments (34)Ok all flowers are finally planted Straw! LOL We really love Earthsongs blooms! I really hope Earthsong does well here! That RU Rose Bush only has 1 bloom right now but everyone that see's it has very positive comments on the color etc... It kind of glows... Found two of those huge caterpillars on my sisters rose just alittle bit ago... So far I found 5 of those munching buggers... I watched one eat and it ate half of a small leaf in about 9-10 minutes... :-O I looked at our roses this morning and only found a few aphids so they may of left for whatever reason... I watched aphid videos on youtube and was shocked at the amount of aphids some people get on there roses... Wow! From what I saw on the videos made me realize we only get very light infestations of aphids here on our roses....lol I fed our small birds around here in the winter months and I noticed a week ago they were landing on our roses eating aphids... Thomas Affleck Rose Bush in the middle... Even though I think the pic above looks better I moved the Marigold pots so they are alittle closer to the rose bush......See Moretrianglejohn
