What plants naturally have Omega-3 fatty acids?
Comments (11)Plants contain ALA omega 3s (not all, but things like flax/soybean/canola)... Fish (some more then others) contain DHA/EPA... The "good" stuff is the DHA/EPA (they are different but the body can convert them back and forth). The body can also convert ALA to DHA/EPA but the conversion process is inefficient (doesn't yield much by my research). It also seems that grass fed meat contains DHA/EPA, but i haven't researched it enough to know how much. Also be aware that fish do not make the DHA/EPA, but get them from the things they eat (in the end, i believe it comes from algae of some sort). Just remember your brain is made up of mostly DHA, so i guess that would be another good source :). Fats in general are hard to figure out, with omega 3/6/9 saturated/unsaturated/poly/mono...and the next "big" thing may be CLA (google it), also found in grass fed dairy products. I just incorporate as much plant based materials into my diet and throw in some meat/dairy/whole grains...i try to limit sugars/refined grains. Of course dark chocolate is my weakness! I believe there is work being done to have GM grain (soybean?) that can make its own DHA. I'm very anti GM crop, but the alternative is continued reliance on fish stocks. Another possibility is going right to the source, and growing your own algae, which i know at least one company is doing. Probably our best bet, for humans and the environment. If you are pregnant, or have a young baby, research DHA and you might want to incorporate that into your/their diet. The findings seem pretty positive. I know my wife took DHA supplements when pregnant and that was years ago before i knew what it was....See Moreomega3???
Comments (3)You can get omega 3 from certain oily fish e.g. salmon or certain seeds e.g. flax seeds (or flax oil or Udo's oil - I take a tablespoon of udo's oil every day and sprinkle sunflower and flax seeds in my cereal) I cut and paste this info from an article but there is lots of info out there on this subject, type it into a search engine and you fill find loadds of links: The chart below gives the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids youÂd expect to find in a fish. About 20% of the Omega-3 fatty acids in these fish will be EPA, so you need to get about 6g of Omega-3Âs to reach the Âprevention level. This is equivalent to eating 250g of mackerel a week. Fish (3.5oz, 100g, uncooked) Omega 3s (g) Mackerel, Atlantic 2.5 Herring, Atlantic 1.7 Tuna, Bluefin 1.2 Salmon, Coho 1.0 Turbot (flatfish) 0.9 Bass, striped 0.8 Trout, rainbow 0.7 Shrimp 0.5 Halibut, Pacific 0.4 Flounder*/Sole 0.2 *Analysis on cooked fish...See Moreomega 3 anyone?
Comments (17)Haven't noticed a change in mood yet, but it's only been 2 weeks. Mood swings as I age have become unbearable and if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them. Also looking at purchasing a product called Fem Meds, but it's only available online, so I'm a bit wary. I'm a teacher and this is a very stressful, busy time. Usually as I write my reports, I'm eating the whole time. I often gain 2 or 3 lbs. This time I'm losing - weird. Not sure what makes it "calm." I'm at work right now and can't look at the bottle. It is Jamieson brand and is available at grocery stores and pharmacies (here in Canada anyways). I've always been an advocate of getting what you need from what you eat rather than taking pills, but the last couple of years I've been popping a few different vitamins trying to get the hormones under control. So far, the only effect seems to be to make the drug companies wealthier....See MoreHow do I take these fish oil pills w/o getting fish burps?
Comments (8)This is such a good question, because those burps are really gross. They don't bother me as much as they do my husband. They have almost made him sick before, so he's completely stopped taking them. Have you tried switching to a different brand? I was given some samples from a friend that worked for an eye doctor. They are also used to help people who suffer with chronic dry eyes. I'm sorry I can't remember the brand, but they didn't make me burp at all. DH still wouldn't try them, his experience was too bad with the first kind. So I don't know if it was just me or not. They were gels with the oil inside (like vitamin E). Sorry, this isn't much help....See Moretrianglejohn
