omega3???
Comments (3)You can get omega 3 from certain oily fish e.g. salmon or certain seeds e.g. flax seeds (or flax oil or Udo's oil - I take a tablespoon of udo's oil every day and sprinkle sunflower and flax seeds in my cereal) I cut and paste this info from an article but there is lots of info out there on this subject, type it into a search engine and you fill find loadds of links: The chart below gives the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids youÂd expect to find in a fish. About 20% of the Omega-3 fatty acids in these fish will be EPA, so you need to get about 6g of Omega-3Âs to reach the Âprevention level. This is equivalent to eating 250g of mackerel a week. Fish (3.5oz, 100g, uncooked) Omega 3s (g) Mackerel, Atlantic 2.5 Herring, Atlantic 1.7 Tuna, Bluefin 1.2 Salmon, Coho 1.0 Turbot (flatfish) 0.9 Bass, striped 0.8 Trout, rainbow 0.7 Shrimp 0.5 Halibut, Pacific 0.4 Flounder*/Sole 0.2 *Analysis on cooked fish...See MoreRegarding Fish Oil . . .
Comments (18)Just because it was on the news doesn't mean I believe it. As noted here - and in the other thread where fish oil was mentioned - changes have been noted. Our internist mentioned it some time ago because my husband's cholesterol has hovered very near the 200 mark a few times. We've made dietary and exercise changes. Both his parents have high cholesterol. His mother's side several siblings have had strokes, so of course it is a concern. But, I am so thankful to have a doctor that is not quick to push a pill. The Omega 3's can have an impact on cholesterol. Thanks Shee - I'm going to read up on the differences/benefits of the three mentioned and if there is not a significant loss of benefit to the one Boop linked, I think I would like to try that. I'm glad to know though that the one you are using has not caused problems....See Moreomega-3
Comments (5)For years I've had issues with joint pain and stiffness, and "gelling" especially after I've been sitting for a period of time....I was to many doctors including 2 rheumatologists...no diagnosis and only dangerous drugs like steroids seemed to help. (Celebrex in combo with my thyroid meds put me into kidney failure! Thank you very much!) So the only thing I've found that helps me is High Lignan Flax Seed Oil .... I get Barlean's. It must be bought and kept refrigerated. DH and I each take 1 Tbls per day and it really helps. The Lignan is the brown stuff in the bottle that has to be stirred up...if I don't get that, it doesn't help. If I skip it for a few days, the aches and stiffness start to return. There are "essential fatty acids" needed in the diet...essential in that our bodies can't make them from anything and they must be consumed. Flax oil and fish oil contain different kinds of fatty acids and both are important. So for best health, take both. For best health, get a balance of fats including saturated fats. Problem is, the typical American diet is very high in saturated fats and low in the others, so out of balance. I've not heard of taking omega-3 to lower cholesterol. Rather my understanding is to replace saturated fats with poly and mono unsaturated fats including omega-3s may help lower bad cholesterol as you are reducing the total intake of saturated fats. But to just add it to the same diet won't be helpful. My total cholesterol is high, but it's because my HDL is high. My triglycerides are low. All good. But my LDL is also high. But I don't know what that means as there are good LDL and bad LDL and the basic blood test doesn't separate between them. I talked to Doc about it and the next lipid panel I get will be separating those out for me so we have a better understanding of how bad my LDL really is....See MoreDoes anyone use Kirkland Fish Oil (from Costco)?
Comments (15)Paula, Do you have the executive membership--think that is what it is called--I only started getting the coupons after I signed up for that card. I get a rebate check back each year that pays for the difference in the regular membership and the executive membership so I am really out nothing extra to get the few extras the executive membership gives you. I usually save at least $30 or more each time I use their coupons. The coupon this month is for the Wild Alaska Salmon Oil capsules. I buy the Kirkland Natural Fish Oil Omega 3 Concentrate softgels. You can usually use the coupon on more than one item so I stock up--get 2 or 3 each time so I don't run out before the next coupon comes out. I think I ended up paying something like $8.99 for 400 softgels the last time I bought it. Sheila...See Moretrianglejohn
