Will Colon Cleansers or Probiotics help with constipation?

Hello everyone. I have a strange question.

I typically don't believe the hype when it comes to "detox products" but I am at the end of my rope. I suffer from constipation all the time. It doesn't matter how much fiber I put into my diet, I still get clogged up. I've practically turned myself into a vegetarian, just so I can more than the recommended amount of fiber. It doesn't work.

I've tried every laxative and stool softener that is sold at my local pharmacy. And they work for about a day or two, and then I get constipated again. Now, I'm starting to get bad cramps whenever I take a laxative.

One of my close friends told me to try taking a colon cleanser, because they are safer than laxatives, and will help me with the constipation. Sounds fishy to me, but I'm willing to give it a try.. Does anybody have experience with these?

What about probiotics? I don't know much about them, but I'm also told that they can help with digestive issues like constipation. Any tips would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think I'd do anything without consulting my doctor. You never know what is in things you buy on line.

As for the constipation, why not try what an old country doctor told my brother-in-law to do.

First thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything have a large cup of hot water--Not boiling about as hot as you would drink coffee. It worked for him.

Do you drink enough water during the day? Lack of hydration can cause constipation

As always, it's best to consult a doctor. Sometimes you can get advice over the phone without even having to schedule a visit.

To my knowledge, a colon cleanser works like an incredibly strong laxative. Take one and prepare to be on the toilet for several hours.

The water thing sounds like a great idea. Lack of hydration can cause constipation as well as several other problems. Drinking more water may or may not help with the constipation, but it's a good idea.

beegel how much water do you drink every day? and how much caffeine etc? If you load up on fibre and you dont drink enough water to go with it, it WILL make you constipated because you need enough fluid to pass all that fibre. If you drink lots of caffeine it will also make you dehydrate.

you should be drinking around 8 glasses of water a day, more if you drink caffeinated drinks. If you are already drinking plenty of water then see a doctor to see if there is another cause but you may simply just not have a sufficient water intake to keep things moving properly in your colon and water acts as a stool softener so if you dont drink enough of it, you get constipated.

I found that the Yogurt with probiotics was good for constipation.

My gastrointerologist prescribed Miralax for me. I was constipation queen of the world most of my life!! I am now regular, no more straining or enemas.

Miralax is now over the counter, works miracles for me. Like you, I tried fiber and more fiber to no avail.

When I have constipation for any legnth of time I take out the juicer. I juice carrots & 1 apple, it will get you going, you might do it 2-3 days for best results. If you don't have a juicer see if you health food store juices.

I would add a magnesium supplement and I second the water advice. You may have screwed yourself up using laxatives. Most colon cleansers are just as bad, anything with cascara or senna can cause a dependency just as drug laxatives can.

I agree about the enemas and laxatives causing a bowel depency on them. Sounds like you might have IBS-constipation.
I've noticed that a yogurt like Activia actually constipates me more. I second the suggestion to add magnesium. Too much magnesium can give you diarrhea. You might just have to find the right amount that helps you.
High salt intake can also cause constipation. Calcium and vitamin D can too. I've just learned to adjust those doses to not get constipated.
Good luck!

I usually get constipated from eating milk products, so I take a magnesium product at the same time and that does the trick. I also take benefiber, but magnesium is my number 1 defense. Of course, you may be constipated for other reasons. Activia wouldn't work for me because it is a milk product - I would get worse. You can take probiotics in pill form and they will be far more complete. Activia has been successfully sued for making claims that can't be substantiated. I do eat yogurt, but it is the unsweetened Nancy's yogurt. Activia is sweetened with corn syrup.

It is possible that some of the laxatives you were taking could have messed up the intestinal balance in your colon. Lots of stimulant laxatives cause problems for the colon and also are uncomfortable for gas, bloating, cramping, etc...

You could try magnesium oxide, which is a larger molecule than citrate and really absorbs water into the colon. Probiotics like Bifidobacterium Bifidum also have many studies behind them that show they help with faster and more complete evacuation. That might be a more long-term solution than a colon cleanse. Good luck!
