Hernia

I was diagonosed today with a hernia in the diaphram. Anyone out there have any experience with one, surgery? What were the results?

My mom had one: the surgery worked.

Untreated, they are a time-bomb ... a bit of intestines can slip through and "strangle", which means gangrene, severe pain, emergency surgery, and a really long recovery.

I've known three people who had the surgery. It worked in all of them. None seemed to have a very painful recovery, but as I haven't had it, I don't actually know that.

Hi Michelle, This is day 2 of sleeping on my 2 1/2" elevated bed and day 2 of not having pain in my stomache! Is this for real...it is not much elevation but seems to help. DH will raise it more if I need it. He likes it too...seems to help his sinuses. Three days of taking the apple cider vinegar..just 1 spoon at night. Don't know if it is helping the guts but my throat feels much better and I haven't coughed for 2 days. I found some real tasty applesauce by Motts. Enjoyed that today with toasted rye bread. I eat oatmeal for breakfast and am not a big bread eater..I like speciality breads best. I am one up on you...I'm having my third colonscopy in Aug. and 1 endoscopy. The GI specialist I see for the colonoscopy is not local but I think I will ask my GP to refer my hiatus hernia condition to him as well. If anything developed I would want him taking care of it...he's very thorough. What is a hydascan? I have never had any major surgery. With just DH and I to cook for, our meals have suddenly become sporatic. He likes fried food..not on my list so we are worse than a restaurant. It will settle down and I hope he learns to eat more my style...it will be healthier for him. Thanks for all the food suggestions, it has really helped. The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set is a medical code set maintained by the American Medical Association through the CPT Editorial Panel. For example 99213 is a level 3 office visit for about 1/2 hour of the doctors time. Some surgeries & diagnosis will have 1 main code to cover the procedure. For example pregnancy. All the routine visits & delivery are paid in 1 negotiated sum. In your case, I have no idea how they will bill it, or if there might be complications or aftercare. I can guarantee there will be lots of CPT codes billed. Now not every CPT code billed has a charge attached, but the more CPT codes used explains to billing what was done & why the main CPT code indicating time was used. For example, the office visit 99213 should usually accompany another code since the doctor was supposed to be with the patient for 1/2 hour, so it doesn't look fishy. Doctors are routinely audited for using too many of the same CPT codes or using a higher CPT code than necessary so they get a larger check. I knew one doctor who's license was suspended for over billing insurance companies. So, I'm not sure how they will calculate your surgery. I had an inguinal hernia when I was in the navy, it was free. It hurt terrible for a couple days and hold a pillow on your stomach if you caugh or sneeze. They might use lasers for them now and recovery should be easier. Good Luck!!

I have this, as did my father, but then my father always ate very quickly. I've found that I can keep it under control by eating very slowly and chewing my food thoroughly - generally more than I think I need to swallow it. For my father, the worst food was beef, and he raised cattle and thought beef should be eaten every day. It is much easier to eat fish instead. I have one friend who eats like my father, and when I asked him why he was shoveling food into his mouth so fast, he told me that he wanted to eat it before it got cold, but it looked like he was eating from starvation or from fear of someone stealing his food from him. If I sit across the table from him at a meal, it very much affects my hiatal hernia. BTW, I do not have acid reflux, but my sister and brother do and they do not have hiatal hernia. I'm not sure this is what I really have; my symptoms are that food gets stuck in my esophagus and won't go down, and I can wait for it to go down, or I can vomit it back up. My symptoms are aggravated if someone tries to rush me through a meal.

Good to hear. As far as closing up it means exactly what it states. An example of what happens is to put your forefinger on your thumb them make a tight fist. This is the example I was given when my esophagus spasms.

Both my husband and I have had hernia operations, both in the groin area. The most painful thing about my surgery was they used staples and I seriously doubt they use those anymore, as my surgery was in 1979. My husband has two more, one in the groin area (different side) and the other one around his navel area. He lifts heavy items at his job every day.

I had an umbilical hernia about 1.5 years ago. Very small incision...outpatient surgery and home same day. May have taken a couple of the pain pills, but that could have been due to the hour long drive home over rough roads. Grrr!

I've had a hernia on both sides. The operations were no big deal. In fact, for the second one I told the doctor that I didn't like general anaesthesia, and he agreed to simply inject a local numbing agent. The only thing disconcerting was being awake when he was stitching me up and I could feel some tugging. You'll have some achiness and it will be a little hard to get out of bed for a couple of days (you don't realize how you use those abdomenal muscles until you're recovering from a hernia operation!). On the whole, I thought that getting my wisdom teeth out was much worse.

Hernias of the dipahragm are relatively easy to fix - they actually put a flexible patch in there.

Unrepaired, they are a medical disaster waiting to happen: google for "strangulated hernia" and decide if you want to risk THAT. They are a pedal-to-the-metal emergency surgery, and the unfortunate patient usually ends up in the hospital for weeks.
