Hi Betty,

We don't seem to be able to keep the diabetes thing together do we. I was just thinking of writing. I just found out that I have stage 3 kidney disease in addition to the diabetes. I don't know why it was just discovered. I would have thought my doctor would be watching for something like this. The food for kidney disease is the exact opposite of what you can eat with diabetes, so finding something to eat has gotten really tough. I'm going to try the link that socks provided.

I'm really glad to see this thread!! I was recently diagnosed as Type II. Here's my story...I'm 42 (soon to be 43), battled my weight my entire life and have the family history. I am good about getting a physical and blood work every year and for many years, my BS would climb a point or two every year or so. In November 2003, it was 116. By November 2004, it had jumped to 146 and my triglycerides jumped from 99 to 200-something (I can't remember the exact number). My total cholesterol has run in the 230s for years, but HDL and triglycerides were good so the doctor didn't worry too much about it. Anyway, at the end of November, he put me on Lipitor, thinking that if the triglycerides would come down, the blood sugar would follow. When I had lab work down the first week of January, my cholesterol had dropped 60 points, triglycerides came down some but were still a little high and my blood sugar had jumped another 30 points to 178. That's when the doctor added the Metformin -- I also take two a day. I've been getting my blood sugar checked every couple of weeks and it had come down to 142, but went up a little bit the last time -- I'm under a lot of emotional stress right now and suspect that it might be a factor. As for diet and exercise, I did low carb last summer and lost 20 lbs. The doctor said in January that low carb is fine for me, but to also watch the animal fats. I look forward to hearing what your dietician says. Since I was diagnosed, I haven't been exercising or following a diet, but I hope to in the next few weeks as I recover from my stress and grief. I think it's absolutely wonderful that you're exercising and losing weight (maybe you can inspire me)!! Big hugs need to go out to hubby and son for being so supportive. I hope some of this information is helpful. One thing I'd like to add is that my mother was diagnosed in her late 40s and for 30 years controlled it with diet and medication -- and no, she wasn't real strict with her diet, she just watched it. She's 78 now and it has just been in the last couple of years that she's really had trouble controlling it. She's not taking insulin, but does need to check her blood several times a day at home. So, I really believe it can be managed and I'm hoping I can follow in her footsteps. Sorry for being so long-winded, but it felt good to "talk" about it. Janet

He's had diabetes for 4 and 1/2 years. As far as I know they don't go into remission. It's gradually gotten worse over the years. We give him his shot at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. We have to be consistant and right on time. We have learned tips and tricks over the years to make it easier. We have also gotten to be pro's at giving him his shot. I can go in when he's sound asleep and give him his shot without even waking him. :0) We struggle off and on with constipation which is a common side effect with diabetes. We have learn green beans are a natural stimulant. Plus he love them. He can not have any beef or pork. He's on a strict diet and I have to really watch that no one "sneaks" him a treat. My FIL did this one time with a bite of honey glazed jerky and I had to start him on an IV to get the sugar out of his system. He thought he was just giving him a small treat and it almost killed him. It gets easier and you get over the initial shock. I remember feeling so guilty when he was first diagnosed. I thought it was something we did. I have a ton of books on canine diabetes and have read everything I can get my hands on over the internet. Mostly it because of the breed but some had to do with his diet. We were told shortly after he lost his eye sight that they might have to remove his eyes completely because the pressure sometimes can cause severe headaches that can cripple them. We have been really lucky and have never had this problem. That would of been the end of us. He used to have the cutest little brown eyes. Now they are a solid milky white. I too have dawn effect, it is a real difficult thing to try to deal with, I do the snack before bed but that does not help the only way I can avoid dawn effect is to get up at like 2 or 3 am and have a snack! Then my morning fasting number will be in the normal range. That is not going to happen though. But luckily my number even though out of norm range is not crazy high. Insurance will usually pay for as many test strips and lancets you need to do your testing as long as the doctor writes the script to cover testing that often. Mine does. And I also always use what ever brand meter and supplies my insurance tells me is their preferred brand so that it will be cheaper, and every one of the major meter companies have a program you can sign up for where they send you a prescription card to use when getting your supplies that will knock the co-pay cost down even more. I do at times have to remind the pharmacy I have that card on file so they give me my extra discount. We recently changed insurance again through my husbands work and they had a different preferred brand so they sent me a letter with the info to get the new free meter and supplies for their preferred brand. I have never paid for a meter and have quite a few now. I really do like the one I have now, it has all the test strips in a barrel container that is inside the meter so no more handling test strips at all just push the button and it sticks out the bottom of the meter and the lancet is also attached to the meter, makes it very very easy to use for me with my arthritis hands. So sorry to hear about the kidney disease. What symtoms did you have before you knew? What have your BS readings been before? I have a terrible time to keep mine down. Someimes I eat the wrong things. Not that much that I would think would hurt, but it does.Sometimes I just take another metformin. Not sure if that is ok.
Let us know how you are doing and what the doctor's are doing for you. We must keep you in our prayers.

Hi Betty, I didn't have any symptoms. I have labs done every 3 months because of the diabetes and the BUN and Creatnine levels are always part of the panel of tests. My doctor kept saying that my kidney function wasn't what is should be, but it was probably because I was dehydrated from fasting overnight. This last time my numbers were worse so he sent me for more blood work and had me do a 24 hour urine collection. Even though it came up that I had level 3 kidney disease, my doctor didn't call me. I asked my husband to ask about it when he was in for something and they gave him a copy of my labs with a scrawled note to call for an appointment with a nephrologist. I can't get in to a nephrologist until January. Meanwhile I am reading everything I can on the internet medical sites like John Hopkins and the Mayo clinic. They scare me. I don't know why I am developing complication of diabetes so rapidly. I was only diagnosed 3 years ago and I keep tight control. My A1c was up to 6.1 the last time, but even that is pretty good. My first number of the day is between 95 and 110. I try to stay under 140 all day and I never go to bed unless my blood sugar is under 120. I have an exercise bike so I can bring my sugar down whenever I need to. I exercise most days for 1 - 2 hours and sometimes more. I am pretty frightened about this kidney thing and I do appreciate your prayers.
