Age 62 - never had hot flashes... but now

I am getting what can be described as a "hot flash"...several times a day and everyday. Could that even be possible? I ended my periods at age 50 - 12 years ago! Now, could I be getting hot flashes?

I need to ask my gyn but for now wondered if anyone has had a similar situation.

No weight gain or loss/ 108 lbs. since age 20, no significant other health problems (that I know of) just had full panel of bloodwork - all normal (but I guess they don't check EVERYTHING - just the normal panel) I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, etc. etc. I never have fast food, eat pretty healthy...

I seriously doubt they are hot flashes at this late stage or anything to do with menopause.

It could be anything from high blood pressure to an allergy to something. My friend had a problem regulating her blood pressure and she had sweats when her pressure was high and was freezing when it was low. Thyroid problems can cause the same symptoms.I think a visit to your doctor is in order.

While you are waiting to see him go over everything you have drank or eaten. Is there anything new. A new juice or fruit,veggie or food. Then examine if you have used any new household product. Are you trying any new herbal product or soap or scent--including candles.

I hope you get to the bottom of your problem

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and developed hot flashes at the same time. With the Synthroid (synthetic hormones that simulate what your thyroid should be putting out but isn't) the hot flashes have subsided some, but I still need to be in a room that is around 73 or less or I start sweating.

I am 42 and have been on the Pill without taking the placebo for 10 years straight (no flaming, please, I was in an experiment for women with violently painful periods and this was to see how I would do without menstruating. FYI, it works EXTREMELY well and the several doctors who have done my checkups say that there have been no adverse side effects, keep on as long as I need to!) so I thought maybe it was menopause but it isn't, when they checked my thyroid levels they were extremely unbalanced and are getting back in check with the Synthroid. I still avoid humid places but it is better.

Ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels, it is something that can go out of whack and you wouldn't realize it until your bloodwork is done.

Keep us updated, I am very interested to see what happens in your case, and if anyone else can chime in on their experiences with hot flashes I would love to hear your stories.

The gagging could be from what is called "silent reflux"... I didn't even know i had it until i went to the doctor with an ear ache which was also contributed to the reflux. When you are laying down the acid can creep up and then in turn make you cough and gag. I had nausea as well for many years from this and did not even know it. It is quite common in perimenopause as it relates to hormone fluctuations. I take an OTC Zegerid at night for the reflux and it has helped a lot. Also, not eating a few hours before going to bed may help as well. Not sure if this is what you have but it sounds like it to me. As for night sweats i found that at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, walking or running helped tremendously. It also helps with my anxiety and nervousness that also comes up out of nowhere at times. The only thing getting me through is the thought of making it to the finish line and this being over fairly soon... i hope! Good luck

i'm being weaned off my meds, been on them for 10 years, this is the last 3 months i'll get, I'm freaking out as I was LITERALLY homicidal, trying to take 1/2 dose for 1 mo, not working, haven't slept for 1 mo. i'm irritable like crazy, can't even stand myself anymore. So i went back to taking full dose which there's maybe 2 months left. I'm searching for HELP. I have all the symptoms STRONG. I suffered from hot flashes for nine years, until I started taking Zoloft. My hot flashes were every fifteen minutes all morning and evening, with a little relief during the day. For women who have severe symptoms of menopause, precription meds are sometimes needed. If you have no quality of life because of your symptoms and you are completely miserable, like I was, thoughts of suicide can enter your brain -- prescription meds are a much better option. My sister will be 70 in November. Her meno started at age 56. Still has hot flashes quite bad, wakes her several times at night and several during the day. She told me she used hormones for about a year. Didn't really help - still had flashes. Her Dr put her on Effexor for about a year and she said that helped the most as she was able to sleep. With it she had some flashes but it did lessen them. She is currently not on anything and is contemplating going back on the Effexor. My mom had bad flashes into her 70's. She never used hormones. She passed at age 78. I started meno 4 yeas ago, now 58. Still flash but the bioidenticals help a bit. Still flash but less, meaning I might not have to change my clothes.

Yes, I think it is thyroid related. I was switched from synthroid to generic (have a nodule on thyroid for years - otherwise levels have always been normal), but because of the switch, my levels may be off. Calling Monday for test.

I bet that IS what it is... yay! that can be fixed.. hot flashes...not so much - Thanks
