ringing sound in head (tinnitus?)

For probably a couple of months now, I have had this constant ringing (hard to describe the sound) in my head. During the day when I am busy and there are other noises, I can forget about it--but, when I go to bed or sit down to read the paper, etc. or right now when I am sitting at the computer, it is there. Any thoughts? Is this possibly tinnitus? Does anyone have this or have any ideas what is causing it? Thank you so much. Jeanie

It sure sounds like tinnitis to me. When was your last hearing test?

Thanks for responsing, Heather. I don't seem to have any problem with my hearing, though I haven't ever had a hearing test. However, I did make an appointment with my doctor for tomorrow so maybe he will have some ideas.

Thanks exmar! ItÃ¢ÂÂs time for me to try for some relief due to feeling IÃ¢ÂÂm not getting good sleep. The Hearing Specialist mentioned she had alternatives when I was ready. I feel her alternatives would be inserted in the ear as a hearing aid. I will opt to something out of the ear thinking I will still hear any signs of danger better. I see plenty options online but I feel my option blocks away will be just as competitive. I am just getting over the 300.00 DrÃ¢ÂÂs visit that I thought would be covered by my Ins Co Pay since the cost w/n sent until 3 mo later. I chewed them good since it was a few mo before I went into Medicare. A little relief was explained later that even with Ins and Medicare, it still w/h been a 150.00 visit.

I have tinnitus, which was brought on as the result of a head injury I received in a car wreck 4 1/2 years ago. Mine will never go away. It kind of sounds like I am "listening to the ocean" in a seashell 24/7. Most of the time I can ignore it, but it seems when things are really quiet or if I am really tired, it bothers me the most. Unfortunately I also have 35% hearing loss as a result of the injury and it will deteriorate over the years. Very frustrating, as I'm only 41 and now deafer than my parents. My DH also has hearing loss from many years of ear infections and also siren noises (he's a paramedic) so between the two of us, we spend a lot of time saying, "What??!!" We probably drive our kids crazy! LOL! Eventually I will need hearing aids, but am not anxious to go that route until I have to. The only advice I have is to have background music going during the times it is bothering you the most. Brenda

pulsatile tinnitus/glomus tumor?

I went through all this in 1995, the doctors were sure I had a glomus tomor on the vagus nerve, the MRI seemed to confirm it, so they ordered a arteriogram to see exactly what was going on in preparation for the surgery which was to be scheduled later. It did turn out to be a large caratid artery that was close to the bone. It was a very scary process b/c from November to February, until the arteriogram proved otherwise, I had that tunor. From what my dr at the time had told me, glomus tumors are fairly common and can be easily removed depending on their location. So try to relax, it may all work out no matter whar. A friend of mine's mother did require surgery for this, and although the recovery period in here case was long, she is doing well now. My Dr decided I could have a fissure, for which did have surgery topatch the eardrum. Some ear doc's don't even believe they occur, This actually did lessen the pulsating tinnitus, it lasted for several months until I yelled loudly at my teenage son to get the heck out of bed to go to school, and it blew out. I felt the difference immediately. I returned to the dr's, this time a different Dr, as mine had been transferred, this was at Walter Reed Hospital, and the Dr I saw said he didn't believe in fissures, even though the testing performed followinig the surgery showed improvement in my hearing.

American doctors order scans at the drop of a hat. Canadian docs order them immediately IF the situation is critical -- which Jasdip's is not. Jasdip is not waiting a year. What's it been, a month or six weeks? I've waited that long for an appointment for a scan. In the US non-Seniors also pay for all meds out-of-pocket, in and out of hospital -- unless we have paid a tidy sum for insurance for hospitalization -- and for a drug plan. When I was hospitalized for pneumonia for four days last spring, my Medicare insurance paid virtually everything -- care, facility, meds. When I was discharged, Medicare paid the bulk of follow-up visits to doctors, but all meds were 'on me'. Americans without Medicare pay enormous insurance premiums to cover their care. As a Senior, with Medicare, I pay supplemental insurance premiums for care and for some relief for against the uncontrolled retail cost of meds. ALL of us can go bankrupt on expensive meds, but Canada puts some ceilings on what Big Pharma can charge. (Not here.)

It does sound like tinnitus, did you go to a concert recently? Or been in a loud place for a significant period of time?

I've had this for several years and saw several doctors----apparently there is very little that can be done. The ringing at night sometimes drives me crazy, but running a fan helps. I tried a radio on at night, but found that I couldn't sleep with it on. May want to try one of these.

I have one ear that almost always rings or feels/sounds like it is plugged or in a tunnel. Did all the ear tests, etc. The ear dr. recommended taking Niacin and it really does seem to help me! Maybe it would help you.

I have also had this problem and have found that it was worse after I drank diet coke. I decreased the amount of coke, coffee and tea I was drinking and have noticed a marked improvement. Perhaps this can help someone like it did me. Judy

The ringing in my hubby's ear was a horrible problem for him, but he finally found an ear doctor who helped him. Very simple - eliminate salt from your food. Sure worked for him, and it won't hurt you to try it.
