Pain management clinics for shingles

What can a pain management doctor give me for shingles. Ive had since july 2008? I don't have the pain, just irritation of the skin. I cant put on my shirt cause my side tightens so much from the shingles. I have tried all the medicines that my regular doctor prescribed and no luck. So he referred me to the pain medicine doc. Will this pain management doc work?

He might, He might not. It will be worth your while to give someone that specializes in pain, a try. It certainly won't make things worse. Just don't expect overnight improvement. It is a problem concerning the nerve endings. Nerves take a looooong time to heal.

Shingles is a hard disease to endure. It just seems as if it never will get better. A good pain management program could make it easier to cope with it.

My father had terrible shingle pain, so horrible he could barely keep from crying. I did some research and even contacted people who had done studies on shingles. What you learn from that is pretty depressing. I went right out and had the vaccine even though my insurance would not pay. Everyone should do the same as they move toward 60; believe me, you don't want to risk the shingles pain.

Lyrica would control my dad's pain to the point where he could stand it; it also had some side effects that were problematic.

One thing I learned in the research is that by a year (I know you can't imagine having this that long)97% are pain-free. My dad was an exception, and he passed away in January still with shingle pain (died of other causes).

You should pursue every avenue of dealing with shingles and my prayer for you is that it turns out short-lived.

Jane-- I don't know about Sweeby's DH, but I know for myself, I come in contact with lime containing products on a daily basis, and on a CONSTANT basis all day long. But I don't have a problem till I come out of the shower. Not only that, but with lime irritation, you'll usually show a rash of some kind, usually looking like a mild sunburn. In my case, there's nothing. it looks completely normal.

After my kidney surgery, I was on a morphine drip machine, where I had a button to push to reLease medication for the pain. The doctors got mad at me because I pushed the button too often, so after a day it was taken away. I was given Oxycodone pills instead, as needed. I went home with a bottle of Oxycodone pills 60 mg. I was having terrible dreams, which I discussed with my doctor. He suggested I go cold turkey and throw out the meds. Within three days I was feeling much better, and found the pain was tolerable. I don't take OTC pain pills, not even aspirins, because they are bad for my new transplanted kidney. I don't want to jeopardize it in any way. My daughter told me Oxycodone pills sell for $50 each "on the street". But I'm glad I chucked them. If you are itchy, take some Benadryl. They make me sleepy and relieve itching.

Thanks to Valrose & Straw. I'm not too concerned about a little natural "damage" or just plain consequences of growing hybrid teas. My "big" roses tend to get a bit of BS & just keep blooming like there's no tomorrow. They keep enough leaves to keep going despite some naked legs. I'm mostly concerned about my little ones who were just planted from bands. We are getting ready to enter into the high maintenance time of year for my diva princess roses, and I am blessed this year with 8 bands newly planted. (Saved up for a year and also spent 1 month grocery $ on roses! Had plenty in pantry & freezer & who knew when I would be at top of waiting list again?!?). This next surgery will leave me unable to do anything in my rose beds for at least 2 months. Friends will water & deadhead, but they are not gardeners and they fear something happening to my roses while i am out of commission. I guess what I am looking for are very affordable suggestions to help minimize stresses on the babies. I have very little $ & very little physical strength, but God has blessed me with tremendous adaptability & the beautiful gift of thinking outside of the box! Forgive the naivete of this next ?, but my background is in clinical psychology, not horticulture ; ) : will spreading cracked corn, alfalfa pellets, crushed blackeyed peas, etc attract rabbits & deer? I live on a golf course & subdivision is surrounded on the other 3 sides by urban forest. Rabbits & deer are regular visitors. Don't mind sharing, but don't want to attract them. I have used bloodmeal in the past to deter, but can no longer afford it. Have had some success with crushed red chilies. Am awaiting latest soil analysis. That service is free, so sometimes can take forever. Living on a golf course, I feel it's my responsibility as a steward of creation to not put any more man made chemicals into the runoff. All of my neighbors use big chem treatments, also, and I'm seen as the"nut from California" who dumps used tea leaves under her roses and seasons them with chili pepper! I don't care. Being a crazy rose lady is a badge I will wear with honor! Thanks for your input. Roses are such a gift from God.

I do understand Kathi about age and concerns. Not to compare, but my 84 year old mom has had a couple of surgeries. All was well and she wishes she wouldn't have put them off as long as she did. She's a lot like me and thinks stuff will improve with time....(yeah...no it's won't). But...I said to her, what if you have one more year to live and are able to do it pain free? What if it's 5 years? Ten? Kathi, wouldn't you and your husband be so happy to know that the next 10 years of his life would be spent pain free? Sorry to be all opinionated when you didn't ask, but this episode (and the positive prodding of folks on this great forum) has REALLY gotten me thinking about quality of life.... It matters, you know? I was pretty much in a state of "well, there's another day out of the way"...and that's no way to live. I was wishing my life away...not good. ANYHOO enough of me and my doings. I really hope your hubs gets to do whatever is best for him...and that does OF COURSE include getting to be as pain-free as he possibly can.

A relative had the worst case of shingles the Drs. had ever seen after he had a kidney transplant;even Methadone didn't help! I had heard about capsaicin ointment (I use Zostrix brand)& he bought a tube & tried it on his shingles & it worked! He asked his Dr. about it & his surgeon laughed & kind of brushed it off! When he told the Dr. about it later after he had tried it & it worked, the Dr. asked him how to spell it & the relative said: "you laughed & didn't want to know about it when I mentioned it before so now ... forget it!" Ha

I have mentioned it to others with shingles pain & most have said it really did help ... just be sure not to get it into one's eyes ... it has the 'heat' ingredient of chili peppers in it! Wonder if any one else has tried this remedy & did it work?

My father tried the capsaicin cream and it did not help. I have used it for many years for various arthritis flare-ups and have had some success with it so I often recommend it.

You really have to watch how much you use, start with a tiny dab. I use a baggy on my hand to spread it around, and also wash my hands. Not something you want to get in your eyes or other sensitive areas. LOL
