anyone know about ZOUNDS hearing aids?

My husband is considering getting hearing aids and recently got an ad in the mail for a rechargable hearing aid --"ZOUNDS". does anyone have any first hand knowledge or experience with these? Thanks for any info!!

Has he seen an ENT physician lately for a good evaluation. Not all hearing problems can be corrected with hearing aids. You can spend a lot of money and get little or no improvement.

Never, never, never waste your money on one that you get from a mail order outfit.

Agnespuffin: thanks for your reply...these are not from a mail order outfit, it was just an ad explaining who in our area was carrying this brand now. They are sold through physician's offices and there is also a mall store carrying them. I guess the appeal is that they are rechargeable, no batteries..and I was wondering if anyone had tried them yet.

True, there is a lot of info on the internet. I feel however that it does not really apply to me. Take my bifocals for instance. I could not live without them, need them for the computer, the newspaper, books, driving, etc, etc. Would not have passed my driver's lic exam without them. They are an absolute must and I have a good pair. There is a Vision center in Long Beach, fairly well known, where you can get a set of bifocals for $160. All inclusive, exam, glasses and all. That's about as much as the copay and 20% of that useless insurance I have. I was hoping of finding something like that for hearing aids but it does not seem to exist. My hearing loss is a different matter. People that know me, family and friends, know that they need to speak little louder, I know I must face them with my good ear. Radio and TV are no problem I just turn them up, since my biological rhythm calls for me to be unconscious by 10:PM, I don't think that bothers anyone. Phone also has a volume adjustment. I don't attend any important meetings. Since the average age at orchid societies hovers around 80, sound amplification is usually more than adequate. This truly is a nuisance, nothing more, I may just do nothing or throw a few hundred dollars at a cheap sound amplifier. Let's see what turns up south of the border. Nick PS We actually do have a lot of young active members but certainly a good selection of silverbacks most of them hard of hearing like myself.

Hubby has hearing aids and what we learned that was important to know is to get them sooner, not later.... Thankfully he still had 92% recognition of sounds while a friend only had 35% recognition of sounds. She had been reading lips since she was very young and didn't realize how hearing impared she was. When she got hearing aids, she was actually disturbed by background sounds like a door squeeking or the latch clicking, or the clicking of her three dogs nails on wood floors. Those were sounds she hadn't heard. It's not just about increasing volume, but your mind actually will forget sounds the longer you go without the aid of a hearing device. Hearing aids are set to your personal needs - they aren't one-size-fits-all... and all you do is turn the volume up or down. Hubby had a free hearing test at a reputable place of business, they did the wax removal, and he uses a product called Miracell in them for wax. Moisture in his ears is a problem because he's on the phone all day. His hearing aids are a piece that fits over the top of his ear and a tiny wire that curves into his ear opening, rather than a piece that plugs into the ear canal. Besides needing them to be useable on the phone, he goes in and out of a manufacturing plant during the day, and is also in meetings with a group of people. He can adjust his hearing aid so he can hear in all those situations. -Grainlady

Can't speak for the VA part, but the HA part I can DH has had them since he was 6. Last pair we bought was 2 years ago..and we got the higher end. He has a severe hearing loss. He gets the digital (only amplifies the tones he can't hear, not all tones), CIC ones. They run about $5K, and are guaranteed for 3 years, we can then extend the warranty for another 2 years I think it is. Now..there is also one out that looks great, and I've known a couple of people out there that LOVE them...they're more like having a little microphone that sits just outside the ear opening (don't know if that area has a name)...so they don't have the "stuffed ear" feeling. DH goes to an audiologist, they do the hearing test for free. His hearing aids are Siemens..and Siemens are a great buy. The behind the ear can cause problems as you hear what's behind you (that's where the microphone is), where the CIC or the other ones (bit larger)...and I think that newer one I just mentioned...you hear what comes into the ear, as you would naturally. They're suppose to last about 5 years, but we try for 10..because they are so expensive and not covered by insurance. They can be covered by money in a cafeteria plan, but HSA's are more complicated. Well, I got my ReSound hearing aids this afternoon. I saw the ENT last week and have the typical drop-off bilaterally in higher frequencies. No organic problem although he did mention that there was a genetic component to my hearing loss pattern. Regardless, I was a little shocked when I first put them in (and they weren't yet calibrated) with all the sounds I immediately heard. Very weird. But then we worked for awhile and tweaked things here and there, and then I learned how to do things on the app on my phone. That's a really nice feature. So I've had them in for maybe 2 hours; not long. I went to Home Depot right afterwards and since then I've just been sitting out on my deck reading. And I have to say, there's lots of noise/sounds I've been missing-more than I ever realized. But oh-the bird song that I can hear again!! I was missing all that high pitched stuff, which I had realized, but I didn't know how much I was missing. The next big test will be next week when both daughters and all 4 grandchildren get here. We'll see if they notice anything different (ha.) Plus I'm curious to see how I tolerate the feel of the domes in my ears over time. Things in my ear canals have always bugged me but I assume I will build up a tolerance to that.

Oh, I see!! It certainly would be worth looking into.

The regular batteries are inexpensive and it's easy to carry a spare pair. I tend to forget to do things and I would probably forget to recharge.

Do they mention how long the batteries work between charges? It does sound interesting.

Do yourself a favor and forget this company. Go with ANY other company. They have only been in business a few years, have already filed for bankruptcy once, have high employee turnover and are rumored to have extremely high return rates. They also make a bunch of claims that I have yet to see any research/proof on.

In this age, go with a brand/company you can trust.

My BIL and a friend and most of her family wear hearing aids, so I know what I'm talking about. I've heard them talk often about their hearing aids. There are all different kinds of hearing aids. Some just amplify, some cut out the background noise--and on and on. Then their is the fit of the ear piece itself. If you buy off of any tom dick or harry he might not get the right kind for him. I would go with what the doctor said he needed and nothing else

I have a zounds hearing aid, they were my dads and when he passed, I inherited them, . sounds like a funny thing but hearing aids are expensive. Set up an appointment to have them serviced and set to my hearing and that was it. no batteries to change and a charge lasts all day and night very comfortable. I have been using this for 2 years and the batteries are still fine. The only down side is that they are in lady lake now and I live in npr, so have to travel a little. but would recommend this hearing aid to any one that needs one.
