anybody tried guayfenesin for fibromyalgia?

I've read the book, and visited the site explaining the protocol. I was all set to try it when my rheumatologist decided that instead of or in addition to fibro I have lupus. She is starting me on another new medicine and I didn't want to start 2 things at once.

A few years ago I tried it for about 5 weeks. I think I was using about 1200mg a day. I already have a hyperactive bladder, and that made it so much worse, that I gave up trying. I didn't notice any difference with it......but hopefully it might work for you. From what I understand, you have to be very careful not to use any acetasalisylic (sp?) acid with it....whether in meds, foods, cosmetics, etc. Good luck to you.

I never had fibromyalgia, but I do think I had some sort of chronic fatique for a quite a while. I came down with some sinus problem and my doc put me on some guaifenesin combo cold pill. After the medicine was finished and the cold went away, I felt a hundred times better (with the daily fatique). I always wondered if there was some correlation with the guaifenesin I took.

I have some other health problems, so I never really know what is going on, but if that chronic fatique comes backs, let's just say, I'll be waiting for a sinus problem so I can get some more of those pills!

I know this sounds crazy.....and maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. I have fibromyalgia. Part of my "affliction" is that I hear too much, I see too much, I feel too much, I notice too much. There are alot of theories out there as to what it really is (fibro), but for many of us, it seems to be a sensory system that's too acute. I've often wondered if it had something to do with having an ancient body in a modern world. Perhaps our bodies/brains/neuro systems have kept more of some of those senses than other people have. I know this idea is probably really too out-there, but I've just always wondered about it. What got me started thinking this way is when I went through a few years of feeling like I might fall over alot of the time. It wasn't severe dizziness.....just a sense, perhaps, that was picking up on the movement of earth through the universe. I know it sounds whacky......but I guess some of us are always searching for answers to make life make sense. When I worked in the ER, we'd have tons of crazy people come in, and also pregnant women when there was a full moon. Some people get horrible migraines when a front comes through, or their arthritis flares up. Some people get SAD (seasonal affective disorder)when fall comes. My body definitely reacts to the autumnal equinox. There are many examples of how our bodies react in an instinctual way to things, but we as humans are so disconnected from nature, that we don't even notice......or run to the doctor for a medication to get rid of certain feelings. I think we probably have lost alot of our abilities with our various senses, out of dis-use. I also think that some of our senses have been messed up by modern life......using alarm clocks, electricity, additives and preservatives in our food, medications, heating, air conditioning, etc. I wonder how long of living differently, it might take to get them back? Sorry to ramble.....

Oh my.......just reading all these all these posts have me smiling, and tears rolling down my face, plus a few chuckles, and the biggest, warmest feeling ever!! You all are the BEST. So much caring, support, advice, and enough sweetness that I feel like I'm in a candy store. :o) I truly love you for all the joy you give, and the big hearts you have. I'd be truly lost without you in my life. Fun2B, "Decorating shouldn't be a chore, but a joy."...very wise words. I've been concentrating on the work and not the joy, I'll work on that and my decorating this weekend! Thank you! Janet, you made me laugh with your DH's 'one spoon, one plate, one glass' and a LOT of tools.....while your 'junk' clutters up the house he thinks. LOL. Men! I don't know how to you make all those wreaths with everything on your plate, and all the pain you deal with too. So very hard on you!! Sending you love and prayers, always. You on the other hand are a huge help, I loved what you advised....."my advice is to choose a subset of decorations that are your favorites or most important to you and begin decorating. I think you need the decor to feel like the holidays and I think you need to go through the process of decorating." I am going to do this!! Phoggie, so nice to meet you! And thank you. I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband, and I hope I didn't make you sad with my complaining about my Mr. O. I know you must miss him terribly. Several of our ladies here are dealing with the same huge loss in their lives and I need to apologize to all of you if I was insensitive. I also regret you are another of us who suffer Fibro, but you're in good company here for sure! That is wonderful you've been asked to decorate for a home tour! You must do beautiful things. I hope you can share pictures with us. Yes, holiday depression this time of year is pretty common unfortunately. Since my Dad died, I sure had a bad time the last two Christmas'es with it. And fighting it this year, but at least I'm beating it for the most part. I look forward to Christmas Eve with family, but Christmas day makes me sad. Here 'alone' and its just another day. (Mr O still goes to golf course, tho its closed, and just practices. Or watches football.) Not sure about the mental illness, but it's a great possibility. I have a BIL and SIL who are bipolar. One worse than the other. Another SIL is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. She did things like your daughter does. She also had abortions and is divorced. I asked two woman once who had had abortion how they felt. If it was painful. They both said physically it was okay. Emotionally it was hell. Maybe your daughter feels like she doesn't deserve to be alive after having so many abortions and losing so many children. Maybe she's trying to destroy herself because of the emotional pain she is suffering because of her choices and then, when she's sober looks for hope, and then gets down again. Up and down! Up and down! Not getting into a long story but one that relates very well with your granddaughter's life. She should be in counselling NOW. My brother and his wife are raising their son's 2 sons because the mother is a drug addict who has caused so much emotional damage to the eldest since he was 4 (now 8). He had a counsellor from Children's Aid come over to the house and she did some "play counselling". It really helped him. He'd do well until the mother would call and say all kinds of stuff to him to turn him against my brother and SIL. They have now decided to cut all ties with her for the kids' sake and resume counselling. It was destroying them. They are dealing with the courts right now. It's not good for your granddaughter to be subjected to her mother's emotional outbursts and all the stuff that's going on. It will only destroy her too, so PLEASE get her into counselling now! Don't mean to sound unfeeling or whatever, but I don't think there's anything you can do now to help your daughter because she NEEDS to want to help herself. BUT.. what you CAN do is make sure your granddaughter doesn't suffer emotional damage because of her mother's actions. She needs to know and understand WHY her mother does the things that she does, and only a qualified professional knows just how much info a little mind can take at a time so as to not overwhelm them too much and cause more damage. Just my opinion. I wish you luck and strength as you go through this with your family. P.S. A friend of mine had a schizophrenic mother who did all kinds of things to her. My friend was 9 years old when she ran away, collecting pop bottles to get something to eat. After 3 days on the street, she'd go to the police. "They" would get the mother back on her meds, then my friend would go back (and her brother). Only this would happen over and over again. She ended up in a total of 40 foster homes. At 16, she was on her own. ONE foster mother gave my friend (aged 15)several books about schizophrenia and told her to read them all so that she could understand WHY her mother did the things that she did. It wasn't because she didn't love her. It was because she was mentally ill. My friend said that reading those books changed her whole world. She didn't hate her mother anymore. On her wedding day, she saw her brother for the first time in a very long time. My friend invited her mother to the wedding. When her brother asked her how she could invite her and still love her after everything that she did to them, my friend told her brother that it's called forgiving and understanding and she'd talk to him about it when he grows up! I have to say that my friend turned out very well. Never did drugs or hit the booze to numb the emotional pain of her childhood. It actually made her stronger. The brother, however, today, is bipolar and smokes drugs! The mother is now deceased, but my friend took care of her by arranging proper care when she was too sick to care for herself. She would also go pick her up to spend Christmas day with her husband and kids. By educating herself about why her mother did the things that she did, she didn't grow up with resentment, hatred, low self-esteem, feeling unloved, etc. She grew up knowing that her mother loved her in her own special way, the only way she could, and was mentally ill, and had "outbursts" when she was not on her meds, etc. Your granddaugther needs to know the same about her mother!

I think maybe I'd come up with one good response, plain but politically correct, and use it every time she starts. Something like: If you're here and not at home or the doctor, we need you to do your share of the work. If you cannot do that, you should go home or to the doctor. And I just would walk away, not give her my audience. She'd learn that I am not the right person to complain to. My MIL is like that, too. However, I only see her a couple times a year and talk on the phone to her only a few times a year. I can tolerate it for a short time. Even when we visit for a few days, I just listen and offer superficial sympathy. She feels the only way to get attention is to be sick. However, as soon as she has anyone's attention for a minute she consumes it with health complaints. She will even go into explicit detail to her grandchildren about her bowel movements. (Nothing brings generations closer. LOL) So people avoid giving her their attention to avoid the health complaints. It's a cycle. When I do talk to her, I try to ask more specific questions that "How are you?" If she's tried any good recipes; been anywhere fun; what she's watching on TV these days. Granted, she can even turn that around to foods she cannot eat anymore; how hard it is to walk or ride in car; and the medical report on CNN. But it doesn't open the door quite so wide as "How are you?" I sort of hold her husband a little bit responsible b/c he does ignore her unless she is sick. But when she is sick, he fawns all over her and tells everyone else to give her a break. She grew up the oldest of 6 kids on a farm, I'm sure she had to be very sick to get much notice.

carla.......I think that sinus infections and problems can really sap our energy. Maybe that's what was making you so tired?
Also....on the other hand....with my fibro and perimenopause, I discovered that I had LOTS of sinus problems. When I started talking to other people with fibro AND women going through perimenopause, sinus problems seemed to increase during these conditions.
I've started thinking that our sinuses are a good indicator of what's happening in other areas of our bodies.
I know I've really said nothing here, except to mention what I've noticed.
But I'm glad the guai seemed to have a big effect on you.
Maybe I'll try it again. Only problem with it is it makes me have to pee constantly.
Oh....and you can get quaifenesin over the counter now. It's called Mucinex. And it's in the larger dosage that you should take for fibro.

Oh gosh no, I don't think the chronic fatique I had was just from a cold or sinus infection. It lasted over a year and was different than the fatique you get with a cold or strep. I couldn't even drive for a few months. I'm sure others who have it know what I mean. I just know that sometimes chronic fatique and fibro. go together, so I thought some here may benefit from my experience.

Like I mentioned, I did have some other more serious health problems, so maybe it was just a coincidence with the timing but I wouldn't doubt that the guaifenesin did something to help. I didn't read about it being used for fibro. or chronic fat. until way later, so I know it wasn't just wishing thinking on my part either.

I think my prescription dosage was different than the over the counter Mucinex, and I know it was and a lot cheaper because I remember the doctor talking about it.

Sorry, I misunderstood you carla. I had debilitating fatigue for several years too. It really stinks.
I was on quai....about 600mg 2-3 times a day. I believe that's a moderate to higher dose for fibro. The mucinex is 600mg tabs.
If you can get a prescription for it, and have good insurance, it would probably be cheaper that way. The mucinex is $20 for 30 tabs.
I tried it for about 5 weeks, and didn't feel any difference.

Hello. I have had Fibro since 1996 and have tried everything.
I have been taking the guyifenesin,2400 a day and I feel much better. I started with a low dose at first and then went up in dosage. It takes awhile before you feel any different. You have to drink a lot of water because it detoxes your kidneys and liver also. The first 2 weeks you may have headaches and feel like you have the flue, but it is worth it in the long run. I still have my days but few and far between.
You have to eat right and try to exercise a few days a week,which I am tring to do....
Dont give up on it..I have been taking it for 3 months and feeling better...( also taking lexapro and Neurontin.)

My sister in law suffers from Fibro...for a few years now...and I have friends that have suffered from it too...I have even suffered from chronic pain, but never when to a doctor for it. Umm gaufinsin is a mucolytic it helps break up mucuous. So I'm not sure how it helped pain.
