anybody had a hysterectomy?

What was the recovery time? It looks like I am headed in that direction and I am wondering what to do about my summer plans. I had a longer than usual recovery with both my previous, unrelated surgeries and am afraid that summer vacations may be unrealistic for me.

Skip making summer plans for this year. It's not so much as how long it will take you to get over the surgery, it's the lasting effects of having anesthesia. It can make you feel yucky for months sometimes. You will have to be careful about lifting things (no suitcases, etc.) and you will tire easily. So unless you are going to have a real laid-back, do-nothing vacation, you would be better off staying in and taking it easy. Doctors usually want six weeks of GOOD BEHAVIOR before they allow normal activities.

I had a partial hysterectomy in 1986 (still have one ovary). In four weeks I was walking (slowly) at the park around the track. I was going to be out of work for 8 weeks, but I went back to work after 6 weeks.

Just a quick response: 1. We have a AHS approved Display Garden 2. We now have over 500 hybrids 3. 20-25% of the hybrids were registered from 200 thru 2010 4. Yes it is at a home but we are a registered nursery in NJ and inspected 5. We post the blooms every day during season on our web and have done so since 2008 so you can see both the flowers and the garden as it has evolved 6. We hybridize extensively with 4000 seedlings from 2009 and 2000 from 2010 waiting for results 7. We have an open house on July 8-10 and generally are around most of the time, but I am at a trial in LA right now, so email me if there is interest. 8. We are not Apps and his production, most likely never will be 9. I had a total hysterectomy at the age of 36 due to an ovarian cycst the size of a grapefruit. (It had become that large in a matter of 3 weeks). They had prepared us for it being cancerous but luckily it was not. When they opened me up, I also had endometrosis everywhere. They literally had to scrape all my internal organs and even removed my appendix. I had already had uteral surgery to help me get pregnant and a C-section with the smiley shaped incision but they had to do a huge incision that goes from above my belly button all the way down to you know what! It kinda looks like an anchor with both incisions. Let me say this was way back in 1986 so alot has changed since then. I took estrogen and progestone for a few years then dropped it to just estrogen. I stoppped that about 10 years ago now and my biggest complaint is that everything on me is dry. I have tried the creams and stuff but nothing seems to work. Hot flashes come and go but overall that isn't my main issue. I still have paps done every three years - its actually more of the lining of course but you should still be checked for endometrial cancer. The estrogen threat is not just for the ovarian cancer but also breast. It was actually my husband who suggested I talk with my doctor about stopping the estrogen as it was being discussed among the doctors at the cancer center where he works in Radiation Therapy. As I said that was 10 years ago or more. So much depends on your age - I was so young at the time, the hormones were basically a necessity but now I am glad I have stopped them.

Actually... that's not entirely true. I feel like I have to step in here and make a correction. The number of chill hours is just a methodology to try to quantify something that is not so easily quantified. In reality, deciduous plants do not so much respond to the exact amount of chill hours, but rather, it would be more accurate to say, to the time period duration without elevated temperatures. Theoretically, a plant could be exposed to the "necessary" amount of chill hours but a few hot days interspaced in that period of time could ruin it. On the other hand, as long as the temperatures remain constantly cool throughout an extended period of time, the plant does not need any real "chill" at all. This is why oftentimes fruit trees located in more marine climates require less chill. To state it again, it's not the chill that makes that makes the plant meet its chill requirement, it's the absence of heat, continuously, over a length of time. On the other hand, the combination of heat and high humidity together are often deadly to cherry trees. The cherry tree will be prone to disease, or get attacked by insects. Native Black cherry (Prunus serotina) tends to be better adapted to these conditions than European cherry, though Black cherries are not as tasty for eating out of hand. At least in California, Royal Lee/Royal Minnie will certainly get enough chill hours in zone 9. They can also fruit in zone 10 but will tend to be a bit less productive. Cherries have difficulty handling the heat when the climate is too dry, or when it's too humid, but this has nothing to do with winter chill hours. Interestingly, if anyone bothered to do some research, there are not that many places in the world with a zone 10 climate that also do not have high/low humidity extremes.

Thank you. I m still hoping a hysterectomy won't be necessary. I had a biopsy today. My that was painful. I should know next week what, if anything, I am looking at. I am hoping to be able to travel to Arizona in a couple of weeks, so I need to figure out what to expect.

If it turns out that you need the surgery, perhaps you can schedule it after you get back. Usually, unless it's an emergency surgery of some sort, it will take a couple of weeks or so to get it on the OR schedule in a busy hospital.

I agree that you should be able to take your trip to Arizona and if the surgery is deemed necessary, ask your doctor if it can be scheduled later. Sorry that your biopsy was painful. I have a very low tolerance to pain myself!

My surgery was medically necessary, as I had a large tumor, so I wasn't one of those "unnecessary hysterectomies".

My hysterectomy was easier than having my 3 kids at 10Lbs each.They said ask for pain medicine.I didnt have any.I had mine done vaginally

It was benign. No hysterectomy for me, at least not right away. My doctor thinks my ovaries were trying to squeeze out a couple more eggs - hence the bleeding. I am 58. this is ridiculous.

Bulldinkie, mine was done vaginally, too. The thing that has the camera on it went into my belly button- I now have an outie- and two bandaid slits on each side of my abdomen, which I can't even see now. Also a tape to watch of the operation whenever I want to remember what it was like. Wonder what I've done with that.. I don't remember any long recovery time.

Gandbb, if you have made it to age 58 with no hysterectomy, maybe you will never need it! I was only 36 when I had mine. My doctor told me it was all in my head that my hysterectomy caused me to gain weight. I did gain a lot of weight and it even changed my personality (hormonal thing you know!)

If you don't need it, don't have it.
