D-Mannose ?

Has anyone tried it? Its suppose to be for UTI's. Whats your opinion on it?

I didn't even know what it was until I googled it. I put a url for different opinions on it below. It does have some side effects like all drugs, some are serious.

What does your doctor say about stopping the UTI's.

I tried and love my organic options before meds but this one didn't work for me. I mean, when you have a UTI it is hard to wait it out a few days, even more than one day, for the symptoms to subside. Are they chronic (UTIs) for you? You can probably take cranberry supplements as a preventative measure.

I am sooo sorry for what you and your dog are going through. I've lost two animals to cancer in the last 6 mos and have had a malignant tumor removed from the leg of another one a couple of months ago. Cancer is frequently mis- or undiagnosed. We want to believe that these things are obvious and easily identified, but that's often not the case. What you need now is information, and that's what the oncologist will provide. You need to know the prognosis and the treatment/management options so that you can make an informed decision about how to proceed from here. In addition to your local vet and oncologist, I recommend seeking a second opinion from another oncologist to help insure that you are acquiring as much information about your options as possible When my animals were diagnosed, I contacted the Colorado State University Animal Cancer Center. They offer free telephone consults with a veterinary oncologist. You can email or fax copies of all of your dog's lab and pathology reports (and xrays or other tests, if you have them) to the center so that the oncologist has an opportunity to review your dog's records before the consult. The more information and test results you can provide beforehand, the more relevant and helpful the consult. If you decide to do this, make sure you write down all of your questions so that you don't forget to ask anything during the call. I will provide a link to the cancer center below. You have my deepest sympathy. I know what it's like to think you're fixing one problem, only to find out that it wasn't what you thought it was, but was, tragically, much worse. Take a deep breath. So along these lines, I just tried taking some melatonin to help me sleep. I'm really paranoid of prescription sleeping meds though I have tried them and they work wonderfully with no apparent side effects. I'm still concerned about becoming dependent on them. In any case in spite of doing all the other recommended practices to sleep - exercise but not too late, quiet, dark, etc. sometimes I get very little sleep - maybe 3-4 hours. I then have to go to work at a very demanding job for 10 or more hours and I simply cannot function like that. So now I'm avoiding prescription meds and taking something that could be just as dangerous. I've done some reading of what I consider to be fairly reputable sources - lots of potential side effects and possible drug interactions with other meds (none of which I take from what I can tell). It seems to have become more effective after using it for a few days - works great. Interestingly my mother tried taking it years back and she thought it did nothing. Maybe I'm experiencing the placebo effect. It's an interesting dilemma....whether or not to take anything at all to treat a "problem" and if so what. I've also taken Zicam which considers itself to be homeopathic. I find it works really well at heading off cold symptoms - unlike anything else I've ever found. If I didn't have to go to work every day I'd probably be more inclined to just suffer with my ailments but I need to be able to go to work and be functional.

It had a warning in the title and we have had these kinds of discussions here before. My one word of warning is to ask your ob-gyn to please test to make sure you do not actually have Lichen sclerosus. Which is often times the cause and not properly diagnosed by many docs unfortunately. It is most common in women past menopause that are not taking any hormones but can happen in anyone. There have been many many cases of women thinking they had simple dryness when in fact it was lichen sclerosus. You can find out more about it by googling. The symptom most often seen reported by women is the dryness and pain problem. There have been a few discussions on GW about this topic so a search on the GW forums could possibly bring those up. Be sure you are not making your problem worse by the type of soaps and body wash you use, many doctors suggest using something like cetaphil only to make sure that the soaps and emollients are not making the problem of dryness worse or causing it. I had shin splints once, terries. Wow, is that painful. Funny but I had them at the same time I was recovering from carpal tunnel surgery and everyone kept commiserating about my hand. My hand didn’t hurt at all but my shins were killing me. I actually got them from standing in too high heels on a stone patio for hours. Wish I’d known about turmeric then. Impressive that you do the Camino every year!

Sorry......The cranberry thing is a myth, it does not help. If it seems to help just try drinking more water and see if that helps also. When I looked for cranberry juice I could not find anything that was all cranberry juice. It's just another cool aid drink, at least what I saw was.

The cranberry acidifies the body and works for some by adjusting the PH. Not human but I used to give my cat, who had urinary crystals with vet approval, cranberry concentrate that you use to make your own drink. Real cranberry juice is so strong that most would not be able to drink it straight. If you have ever tried to crush a single cranberry you have seen how little juice it will provide. Cooked it releases the juice but without added water burns before all of the berries are cooked. Try it and see.

The findings of the study was in our local newspaper. It said there were no benefits found by consuming cranberry juice.

I just researched it for myself and put the URL below. You especially need to read the the Pros & Cons because of the side effects of the strong dosage you need. Then weigh the benefit against the side effects.

The cranberries can cause kidney stones. That is only one of the side effects. It causes other things because of the acid in the berries. The studies were done with concentrate juice which is very hard to swallow, literally.

One site said "Currently, no medical organization recommends drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry pills to prevent UTIs."
