I want strong, healthy nails please!

I have always been a nail biter, and have worn acrylics for about 15 years. I decided to let them grow out, and realized I didn't have the need to bite them anymore! Yay!

However, the nail base where the acrylics were have grown out so I have un-filed nail beds that are still very soft, paper-thin and tear easily. One is especially bad because it got smashed in a door when I was little.

Also, both my thumbnail beds are lumpy. You look at them from the side and they look like a rollercoaster. I have filed them to an extent, but I don't want to file through to the nail bed and I don't want them to grow out with those thin areas, but even after being fully grown out twice now they are still growing out lumpy.

So my question is what are the best remedies for thin, brittle nails? I have seen the Sally Hansen "Hard as Nails" and other products at Walgreens, are they worth it? I do keep a clear coat on my nails right now, but I want to start painting my nails. I have also heard pre-natal vitamins are good, where do I get them? I have no children!

Also, my toenails are sort of the same way, when my big toe nails grow out they tend to chip off at the corners, so I have to keep them filed down very low.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The best product I have found is called Nailtiques. There are I think 3 formulas, and I believe one is for people who are coming off acrylics. The product was recommended to me by a manicurist, and I found it at a beauty supply store.

Well, I don't want to depress you, but some of us just aren't endowed genetically with strong healthy nails. I wanted them as a child, and still don't have them at almost 60. I really think its in the genes.
I don't think any of those products work. Sorry!

Thanks Socks, I will give them a try.

Catherine, I know I will never have the beautiful nails my husband does (what a waste, he has the best finger and toenails, strong, clean and healthy, and I would trade him in a minute for them!) but I was hoping for something to make my sad little floppy nails a bit sturdier. I tore one in the shower today just washing my hair. Sigh.

It's going to take quite a while for your nails to recover from the damage caused by years of "sanding" down to allow the acrylics to adhere. The best thing to do is keep them coated with nail polish, multiple coats to keep them from tearing or breaking. There is a product you can get at Sally's Beauty Supply or equivalent near you. The one I'm thinking of has something to do with horses hooves. I can't remember the exact name. This brand has a treatment you brush on like polish and also a cream like stuff you rub into the nail bed and over the nail. You just make it part of your nightly bedtime ritual.

I second the idea that it will take about 6 months for your nails to recover from the acrylics....maybe longer.
I like Sally Hanson "hard as wraps" top coat, over a base coat and 2 coats of OPI color of your choice.
I also am very very sure to get more then enough calcium and vitamin D and I also take biotin....and protein. I have a tendency to short myself on meats and eggs, so I try to pay attention to eating enough protein....and if I slack off for a couple of months,,,I really notice.
Is there life after acrylics? Eventually!!

Why do you say it will take 6 months to recover from the acrylics? The base that was damaged by the acrylics is long grown out (it took about 6 weeks to grow them out) so is the base still damaged under my cuticle? I always had weak nails as a kid, way before acrylics, so I think it might just be me.

I will definitely go get some of the products recommended, I appreciate it!

You might want to start taking Biotin and/or prenatal vitamins. Both of these help the nails a lot.

Good luck!

Start taking a high quality soy protein shake daily. This will make a huge difference for your nails and hair.

If you're still looking, I'm a refugee from nail wraps because if my nails grew any length at all I would get breakage in the middle of the nailbed and it hurt like H... Nail wraps took the pain away but it took its toll on time and hated the fake look, I knew anyway. Someone on this forum suggested Sally Hansen nail growth miracle and I no longer have he problem with breaking nails. I just clipped off 1/4 inch off my nails as they were just getting too long. What I found also worked is no longer available, Onymyrrh oil, and this works just as good or better. It also works as a clear nail polish, and I put it on as it wears off. I'm bad about taking supplements on a regular basis so biotin never helped me.

In my opinion, there is nothing like Nutra-Nail for making nails strong. It is a water-like substance, quick 'n easy to put on & dries fast. WalMart & all pharmacies I've been in carry it -costs about $5.

Nope...don't work for them nor have any affiliation other than using the product. Others I've told about it got same super results I did. As far as ridges, buff them daily with a soft nail buffer ONLY until they feel warm and be very cautious about pushing down next to nail bed if you push cuticle back -otherwise ridges will continue to be there as they grow.

Good luck!

My nails used to be soft and would tear and break. Because of osteoporosis I started taking calcium, vitamin D, C, and magnesium. My nails are very hard now- even if they get pretty long they don't break or tear even when working in the yard without gloves. I'm a firm believer in those vitamins and calcium. I use Caltrate- 2 a day. It's hard to swallow those huge tablets so I let them dissolve in a spoonful of water.

I don't know the answer to your question, because my nails are strong and healthy. But I recently have had a problem with them being hard and yellow. I started using nail oil on them once a day and they are again white and flexible. That is the first time I have done anything like that to my nails other than file them. The bonus is, I rub the excess oil on my hands and it sure makes your hands soft

I also have very weak, brittle nails. And I never used acrylics. I recently started taking more calcium on the advice of my doctor and my nails do seem to be a tad stronger.

I am amazed at the length of some women's nails who work at the supermarket or in offices! I can't imagine how they type with those long nails. Or do other tasks. My nails used to break when I put on a fitted sheet!

On Dr. Oz today they talked about brittle nails, he told them to squeeze lemon juice over the nails then drizzle olive oil on top. Wrap your hands in saran wrap then put them in a sock, then sleep with them on. Its sounds like a salad to me but it might be just the thing.

I would suggest you to take protein rich diet as the nails grow because of rich protein content in your body. Instead of any artificial medicine, protein rich diet can only give you strong & healthy nails.

I totally identify with you michelle when you say you tear your nails washing your hair! Mine are so thin. I too have tried the acrylics and swear I'll never do that again. I've also done the fake nails myself.

Right now I have a regime that seems to be helping. Currently I'm keeping my nails short. I'm taking a multi-vitamin and a Calcium supplement. I'm rubbing in nail oil (found at discount stores)twice a day to soften the cuticle area and stimulate the nail bed area. The nail oil has really helped make the cuticle area look nice so there's minimal trimming of the cuticle (something I used to have to do all the time). Then I buff once a week and put a clear polish on twice a week.

I've had soft, thin nails for years and tried all the Sally Hansen products. Nothing helped until I tried their new product. It's called - Sally Hansen Strong Nails Now and it's the best (orange bottle). It's clear and makes my nails so hard. I'll never give this product up!
