Muscle/Nerve Tests

My husband has had tingling and numbness in his right leg for the past year. He finally went to a specialist and had a nerve conduction study and an electromyography. The next thing will be an MRI on his back. I've been reading the possible diagnoses from these tests, and none are good.

Has anyone ever gone through this?

I have had EMGs and MRIs. Neither of them DO anything, good or bad. However, they will show problems that cannot be seen any other way. Some will be correctable and some will not. If the tests are negative, then the solution, if possible, requires further testing.

There is nothing to be gained by not having the tests. If his doctor thinks that they will reveal what his problem is, he should certainly get them. There are many things that could be causing the numbness and tingle. The most likely is a problem somewhere along the spinal cord that doesn't show on a regular X-Ray.

I've had all of those tests and none of them led to a diagnosis. My that nerve conduction study was painful! I still assume that what I have is diabetic neuropathy, but my doctors said it couldn't be that because it wasn't bi-lateral, but now it is. It doesn't really matter because so far as I know there is no cure for it anyway.

I called and at least got them to move the appt. from the 26th to the 14th. I guess if you not dying, then there is no big rush. I know I should be relieved, but I just want to know what is going on. I got the results in an email and it was not normal, but the explanation was medical gibberish to me. I did lots of web searches but it more confusing than helpful. I need the doctor to explain it. I want to move on with my life and not have this hanging over my head. Clare

Wow, Catherine, thanks for replying! This delayed pain has been coming and going now for a few weeks, and I mentioned it to my primary care doctor along with a few other muscle/joint/nerve symptoms. She's going to refer me to a neurologist. I do take a daily cal/mag supplement, omega-3 and multi-vitamin, and I rarely have caffeine (the occasional bit of chocolate). No new meds, either, and I'm not near menopause. I also stretch a lot -- I was a gymnast and gymnastics coach, and I'd rather do splits and backbends and pike stretches to reach stuff than squat with my poor achey knees and thighs! Anyhow, I've got a little list of related symptoms to ask the neurologist about, as soon as my doc calls me with the referral. I'll post here if I get an answer, in case anyone else experiences something similar in the future.

I got both of them this autumn, the seasonal flu shot in September and the H1N1 in October when I worked at a City Flu shot clinic. No problems with either one. I get a flu shot every year. I work every day with very vulnerable people. Having had the flu before, I NEVER want it again, and I certainly don't want to pass the flu on to someone who might die from it. Yes, there are risks, as there are with anything we do, but the risks from a flu shot, or any other immunization are very, very small, considering the millions of people who get immunizations every year. Several years ago I got both the flu shot and the Pneumovax and 4 days later I had shingles. It might have been too much of a jolt to my immune system (but it might have had nothing to do with the immunizations), but with quick medication, I got through it with minimal discomfort. In the future, I'll continue to get both vaccines, just not at the same time. It's the non-immunized who spread disease - whether it's a preventable childhood disease or influenza. Non-immunized children pass measles, rubella, whooping cough, etc, to children frequently too young to have been immunized. These diseases can still kill children. My SIL was not allowed to get his smallpox vaccination before he left home for his deployment in Iraq because of the risk to both kids. I agree with igloochic, if you are not going to get flu shots, stay away from others if you feel sick, don't assume it's not the flu, the risk is too great to other people.

Goodness gracious! How irresponsible! This goes back to the License to Breed thing. How can someone who can't even remember money to pay for her own movie have children? LOL! I'd have paid, as well, and laughed about it later, as well. I do it all the time. For instance, X has been "so broke" lately. I usually give him and GF each one of DS's school pictures (wallet-sized) and I give XMIL a 5x7 every year (for DS to give as her b-day gift). Well he goes into this sob story about how he wishes he could have the 5x7 to put on his desk at work because the one he has is from a couple of years ago. So I suggest he can scan the wallet and blow it up and reprint. He says they don't have any paper for their printer. So I gave him a 3x5. The next night, I get a notice from the AG that he has filed to have his CS decreased. Makes me want to go to his house and get my friggin picture back! If he's going to be that selfish, I she be able to as well. But I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I treated him the same way he treats me. Oh well. At least you were the bigger person. Take pride in that.

Yes, I had tests a long time ago because I have tingling and numbness down my left leg. It turned out to be
from a (bulging, if I recall) disk in my back pressing against a nerve. I opted not to have back surgery because I have absolutely no back symptoms and my numbness and tingling is fairly mild, and never got any worse. So I just decided to live with it.

His MRI shows his upper lumbar is arthritic. The next lower lumbars are ruptured all the way to the first sciatic area; there's loss of spinal fluid.

Physical therapy is recommended.

? loss of spinal fluid? Do you mean that your husband has herniated/ruptured discs and there appears to be loss of fluid in the discs?

Unless he has very serious neurological deficits, the standard treatment is to start with conservative treatments of a 6-8 week course of physical therapy to strengthen his core muscles, and to learn to stand, walk and move correctly.

Usually the discs will heal on their own with physical therapy. If a problem still continues then they may want to try a course of epidural steroid injections before discussing any kind of sugery.

If his symptoms get worse during the physical therapy he would need to see his spinal surgeon again right away.

I would also suggest that if his spinal surgeon decides that surgery would be the recommended route, to get several other opinions first.
It is always recommended that you get a minimum of one other opinion before consenting to any spinal surgery and to be sure that you have those opinions with either an orthopedic surgeon who specializes only in spines or a neurosurgeon that specializes only in spines.

Good luck and let us know how your husband does. I know many people who have had the same problem and the course of physical therapy was all that they needed.

I think the discs are ruptured to the first Sciatic area.

There are no neurological problems that I know of.

He's starting the physical therapy tomorrow. I still don't quite understand what's going on, but it's not good.

The way my husband put it, his spine is degenerating quicker than it should (he's only 54), so we have to be proactive, but also realistic.

We're taking it one step at a time. Hoping that the physical therapy is the key to him getting better.

I will keep you posted. Thanks for the advice.
