Question about insurance screen results

I got a life insurance screen back (they drew blood and urine sample). It came back that my Hemoglobin Screen was positive. What does that mean? Also Hyaline Casts measured 430 and normal is 0-10.

Protein level was 100 normal is 0-30. Microalbumin measured at 57.1 normal is 0-3. Does this mean I have some type of kidney problems? I intend to take the results to the Dr but would like some info first. I am overweight and do have untreated high BP. Thanks for any information.

Hemoglobin comes from red blood cells when they are lysed or destroyed. The protein could come from the same problem. With untreated hypertension, you could be lysing red blood cells, causing the hemoglobin and protein results. Could also be that you have narrow blood vessels caused by plaque build ups, which can also lyse RBCs. Could have any number of diseases, including tick-born diseases that also lyse RBCs. Really the screen is just that- a screen, meant to alert the DR to potential underlying problems, which it sounds like you have. You will probably need more tests to determine the cause of the hemoglobin, casts, microalbumin, etc.
Hypertension can also cause kidney damage causing the microalbumin and hyaline casts. That said, you REALLY need to speak to a doctor sooner rather than later. Schedule a longer than normal appointment to make sure you can get as much info as possible about diet, exercise, drugs, interactions with other meds, etc etc etc. BTW, what was your glucose level, and how long after a meal was the blood sample taken?

I'm no expert, but I believe that a positive hemoglobin screen means that there are antibodies in your blood, so you are probably fighting off an infection. Lots of different things could affect your microalbumin number and I don't think the number is particularly outrageous. It is suggestive that something may be wrong and your doctor may order more tests or monitor you more closely. Were you tested for diabetes? That would be my first thought, but that is probably because I am diabetic. Why in the world if you have high BP is it untreated? Dumb question. I didn't treat mine for years after I learned of it. It is only now that everything is going south that I am try to get healthy. I wish I had started earlier.

One thing I discovered is you should call your *agent*, and *not* the company. If you have a good agent you might be able to save some money if there's no action on it. If you call the 800 number it's onto your record with the company where it isn't, necessarily, when through the agent, however you're still in the clear with the company since you notified the agent. A friend found this out the hard way. Called the 800 number with a question and they logged him as an accident. The agent told him to go though their office from now on. That's what they get paid to do anyway. To clarify, Minnesota has modified system of "no fault" yes, but no, it's not all "no fault" in the State. The "no fault" applies only to medical payments and eliminates the insured from being involved in working out the payments by the insurance companies. Fault is still assigned and for being on the road you generally get assigned about 25% blame no matter what happened, then the insurance companies negotiate with each other on reimbursement. For property damage, "no fault" does not apply in Minnesota. I'm surprised that medical liability isn't required nationwide. Here you are required to have liability, uninsured and underinsured, though I have a big problem with the underinsured issue. Insurance companies can be rather arbitrary on rates. They might raise it, they might not. They might raise it down the road, they might not. What am I saying... insurance keeps going up! We're still paying off losses from Katrina fer cryin out loud, which is a topic for another thread! Some watch DMV reports, some watch credit reports, and some do other things. When I had Farmer's Insurance, they pulled credit reports on me every six months! THAT bugged me and was part of the reason I left them.

Gosh, I hate this whole procedure. I'm also seeing that medicare supplements are hugely more expensive for 2016. We've had Plan F high deductible in 2014 and 2015, paying under $100/month. Looks like more than DOUBLE for the same coverage next year -- and very little difference in premiums between high deductible and the comprehensive straight Plan F. I'm wondering if we will even GET a supplemental plan next year. I have yet to meet the deductible ($2800) after my hospital stay for pneumonia. (Medicare paid almost everything.) I'd have been better off not paying premiums! We have to do Part D (drug plan). Fun and games running the numbers of who will charge you less for any maintenance meds -- two for DH and one for me (Adviar, at $300/mo. retail). This is a cockamamie system we have in the US.

Penny, I hope you feel better soon, and can look forward to a rescheduled trip. When it’s your health, not going was probably the best decision. I don’t know if your travel insurance would cover this type of situation or not, but I do think it is important to have insurance, especially when traveling outside the country. This time last year DH and I were on an extended trip across SE Asia. With two weeks left before heading home, he had a bad fall and fractured his ankle on both sides. Communicating with the insurer was somewhat tricky from the opposite end of the world but luckily for us his ambulance, surgery, hospital stay, medications and a nurse medical escort to bring him home were all covered. We also ended up having to stay in our hotel for those final two weeks (we had planned to travel on and visit elsewhere) but the hotel graciously covered the extra days that we were there. As for for credit card insurance, it turns out that the great coverage with our major VISA card which we have had for many years ends once you turn 65. I was never notified of this on my birthday, but a year or two before, on receiving a replacement card, I was moved to read the fine print. So it is always good to check the coverage offered.

anglo, your description of how your assessed value compares to comparable sales in your neighborhood is quite different in my state. California's Proposition 13, passed in the late 1970s, is intended to limit property tax increases for long term owners, and to do so it results in a measure of unfairness of taxation between new versus long term owners. When property is purchased, its value is adjusted to the transaction price. The annual property tax charge at that point and thereafter is limited to 1% of value (though in practice it can be a slight bit higher). Annual increases in assessed valuation (and therefore in the tax bill) from one year to the next is limited to 2% per year. Needless to say, the sustained real estate valuation increases over past years and decades in much of the populated areas has been greater than 2% per year. In the case of two identical properties side by side, a new owner could easily be paying 3 or 4 times as much, or more in annual taxes compared to a long term owner of an identical property next door. When the few downturns occurred, the tax valuations for newer buyers (the only ones with properties at or near fair value for tax purposes) were mostly adjusted downwards. Sometimes grudgingly -valuations are done county by county and some were a bit more enlightened on their own than others.

Thanks for your responses! The only result I got from Glucose was negative. Also the untreated BP is that way because I just found it out. I do have an appointment next week with my DR. These tests were done to update our life insurance. I don't ever remember having these tests done before. I have always had blood in my urine for some reason. I was thinking about diabetes also hopefully it's not but it's on both sides of my grandparents. Thanks again.

I used to do urinalysis as a lab tech ... the untreated BP is enough to cause all the casts, protein and blood. Treating the BP may allow the kidneys to repair themselves, or at least not damage them further.

No, it means there was hemoglobin in the urine, which is not normal.

Thanks for all your input it is much appreciated! I did go to the DR and most of my symptoms were from the high BP which he put me on medicine. But I also have blood in my urine which as lazygardens said is why the hemoglobin was positive. I go for tests (IVP and ultra-sound) in two weeks. What a way to spend my vacation! I'm really not to concerned I have had these tests twice before and the blood in the urine is unexplainable but the DR just wants to be sure. Thanks again you guys are great!

i need help i have somewhat the same problem but i am know on blood pressure medicine but it said that my hemoglobin screen was positive and that my white and red blood cells were elevated can someone tell me what that means
