Degenerative Disc Disease

I had surgery about 3 years ago on my lower disc because it had ruptured. I went for an MRI today and found out the disc above it is wearing thin and my doctor told me it is going to rupture at some point. He wants to do surgery and fix the problem before it happens. I was thinking while have surgery to fix something that has not ruptured yet. I have 3 weeks to make a decision about whether I want the surgery or not. Please give me some advice.

I too have had back surgery, and it was for a disc in my lower back that total blew out, sending the jel like substance into the spinal canal and sending me to the floor in pain. This was after about 6 years of pain, being in and out of emergency rooms for horrid pain, and seeing physical therapists.

Have you been experiencing back pain? Is that why you had the MRI? Has the pain been bad?

After your surgery were you given a 'lot' of back exercises to do daily as part of your back healing and strengthening?
Have you continued to do them as you were supposed to do, or were you told to continue doing them for good back health?

If you are not experiencing 'horrid' back pain, I would look to physical therapy and back exercises as a better fix to at least try first before going under the knife.

I know I should be doing my back exercises daily or fairly regularly. They are geared to strengthening all the muscles in the back, from top to bottom, which aids in keeping the back/spine in alignment. If/when I start to feel some back pain, I start back on my exercises and that takes care of it.

I'm with you...if it isn't (totally) broken, why fix it? Your surgeon sound a little knife happy. Surgery in my opinion is the very last resort. I would not have it unless I was in a lot of pain and only after physical therapy and exercises had not helped, or helped enough.

Do you have a good list of back exercises to do? If not, I can try and find my hard copy of exercises and mail you a copy. Like I said, they are for total back health and were given to me by the physical therapist I saw before I left the hospital after my surgery. They are very comprehensive.

My mother suffered from severe back pain due to degenerative discs, arthritis and spinal stenosis. She used a walker to barely get around and had to rely on pain medication to get through the days and nights. She went to a Pain Management Dr. here who suggested a morphine pump. She hesitated because she pictured herself a morphine junkie, but she had it implanted just beneath the surface of the skin. She never had to take pain medications after that and was not addicted. She merely went to the Dr's office every 6 weeks for a pump refill and then went on her way to do her own things. Oxycontin is a drug that patients can easily become addicted to. The pain of withdrawal can be greater than the original pain that required the Rx. Without knowing your wife I would conclude she is now addicted to the medication and giving her more meds is not going to solve her problem. I would speak very frankly with her doctors and voice my concern about this desperate need for Oxycontin. She cannot go "cold turkey" on her own. She needs help. She's already taking such high doses that increasing it could lead to an overdose and death. It sounds like the doctor that suggested she go to a rehab clinic is the only doctor that's telling you the truth. Consider going back to him. The other doctors seem to be taking the easy way out by giving her more meds. I feel for you and your wife. You're in a bad situation.

I'd probably answer "less than an hour." My DH went thru this & the state had a "rehab specialist" who suggested he could work as a cashier at a service station! The judge told him he'd never seen one offering a cot so DH could lie down after an hour. (He had already had 3 back surgeries & quad. bypass.) Our attorney had another court appearance that day so couldn't go with us...first thing Judge said was "let the record show they appeared w/out benefit of an attorney" & it was very first sentence in our award letter...however the fee was with held anyway & it took over a year to recover that amount! Also failed to receive check for minor child; DH went to SS office with son's birth certificate. Not enough...they wanted more!! My DH asked "Do you want me to bring the kid in so you can SEE him in person?" No, records from his pediatrician, day care & on & on! Another six months before those checks came. It was a nightmare! One pc. of advice...take copies of all of your records & give S. S. ONLY the copies. They tried to keep some of ours. Sure hope your luck is better than ours! Suzi

I think we will try one. There are two or three different kinds: one is made up of tiny little pellets of foam, and I think one targets sleep position for spine alignment, and I think there is one specifically for neck and spine problems. We must have 15 different pillows around here that we have tried over the past few years that have not worked out. Concerning beds: We were strongly considering a tempurpedic mattress a couple of years ago, but DH is a night sweater and we didn't think it would be the best match. I had had such a problem with pressure points at my hips that I could not sleep comfortably, we bought a Healthy Choice Comfortaire bed, which has a layer of memory foam on the top, and that has worked very well. You want to avoid a condition called frozen shoulder. The doctor failed in his/her "diagnosis" you should have been advised as to whether rest, physical therapy or?? would help. Since s/he did none of those the chiropractor is looking better. But you could also get a second opinion somewhere. You might even find that when you get copies of your records to take to another doctor for the second opinion that in fact there's a diagnosis in the records that the first doctor didn't bother to inform you up because s/he didn't think you were smart enough to understand. Some of these doctors' egos are just a little out of control. The chiropractor will actually deal with your body hands-on, doctors avoid touching your body so long as you're conscious. But before I would let anybody manipulate my back or neck, I would look long and hard at their reputation for skill and if possible talk to other people who have gone to that person.
