Tinnitus??

I have developed tinnitus (ear noises or ringing in the ears). It started all of a sudden about a week ago and it is frustrating and very stressfull!

Any of you fellow sufferers have any suggestions?

for me it turned out to be as simple as ceasing to take asperin. I hope it turns out to be something simple for you as well. I understand it can drive a person bozo and is sometimes symptomatic of something far more serious

gandbb, thanks for your response. Regarding aspirin, all I take is 1 baby aspirin a day. What I recently discovered is that my blood pressure is very high & that may be a cause of the tinnitus. I started to take bp meds yesterday and I am hoping that this will help to alleviate this awful ringing in my ears! This constant ear noise is driving me crazy!

I don't have Tinnitus, but I do wear a hearing aid and have since I was 4. One of the best makers of hearing aids is Phonak. I have had 2 of them, the first lasted me 17 years, and when it died on me, I chose Phonak again, but this time I got a digital. It is awesome. The great thing about digitals, is they can be programmed to your specific hearing loss, as far as volume and tones. I have a hard time hearing the 'high notes' so to speak. I went with a stronger aid so that as I lose more hearing I can adjust the 'strength' and be able to keep using the same one. The cost of them can vary depending on the different models they make. You can even get them in colors too. When I was younger I never wore ponytails because I didn't want any of the kids to make fun of me. Now I don't really care, and I ordered one in PINK. :) They do have to be programmed by the audilogist, but it is very simple and doesn't take long. You can go back and have it readjusted if needed. Sometimes it takes a while to adjust to wearing one, and learning to notice the differences in tones. The type I wear is the BTE (behind the ear) where the mold goes into my ear, and the rest fits behind my ear attached by the clear tube. They are SO much smaller than they used to be. DH found some with a 30 day trial. They were $4000. He hated them. He has tinnitus also and he would rather hear what he hears now than all the new sounds & noises he was hearing with the aids. Call around and see if they have the free trail and try it for yourself.

pulsatile tinnitus/glomus tumor?

I went through all this in 1995, the doctors were sure I had a glomus tomor on the vagus nerve, the MRI seemed to confirm it, so they ordered a arteriogram to see exactly what was going on in preparation for the surgery which was to be scheduled later. It did turn out to be a large caratid artery that was close to the bone. It was a very scary process b/c from November to February, until the arteriogram proved otherwise, I had that tunor. From what my dr at the time had told me, glomus tumors are fairly common and can be easily removed depending on their location. So try to relax, it may all work out no matter whar. A friend of mine's mother did require surgery for this, and although the recovery period in here case was long, she is doing well now. My Dr decided I could have a fissure, for which did have surgery topatch the eardrum. Some ear doc's don't even believe they occur, This actually did lessen the pulsating tinnitus, it lasted for several months until I yelled loudly at my teenage son to get the heck out of bed to go to school, and it blew out. I felt the difference immediately. I returned to the dr's, this time a different Dr, as mine had been transferred, this was at Walter Reed Hospital, and the Dr I saw said he didn't believe in fissures, even though the testing performed followinig the surgery showed improvement in my hearing.

Tried them a few years back, and spent a fortune for nothing, no results of any kind, like glycosimine is for some, works fine, lipoflavoinoids work for some and not for others. There is no guarantee in life on anything but death I guess. What works for one doesn't work for another, and what a darn shame, life is not enjoyable with dizziness, and all the grief that goes along with it. I too am used to the ringing in ears, matter of fact I don't really hear it anymore, tho I have heard there are some people commit suicide because they can't stand the noise, I must be lucky, I believe mine came on with overuse of some meds, and damaged everything else in process. Tho, i do notice it seems louder at times than others, It is constant buzzing, and never stops, I always say it only stops when I sleep, but then I don't hear it then anyway!

Any medication that I take will give me just as you described...I havent had asprin in years and especially sinus medication.

I have constant ringing in mine too. In my case it is due to a partial hearing loss. I suggest that you might get your hearing tested at some point.

I have what you could describe as locust humming in my ears at all times...due to driving tractors for years...I guess I've just gotten used to it.

I had my hearing tested and it is still fairly good. I have some slight reduction in high frequency hearing in one ear.
I am getting somewhat used to the sounds but still am bothered at night. I use a sound machine (white noise) but the noise in my ears is a much higher pitch that I can still hear it. My sounds are sort of like locusts, too. Wish it would go away!

Background music is helpful to many sufferers. It seems to help by giving you something else to listen to. That way, you tend to ignore the tinnitus.

A tape of something soothing that you could listen to at bedtime may help more than the white noise. I have a tape player and I find that one side is more than enough to get me to sleep.

I just got an email newsletter today from Dr. David williams, and the main focus in this one was on alternative remedies recommended to him.

One of the things discussed was ringing in the ears, and someone had recommended Ginko Biloba. I don't know what dosage was used, but the person stated that they had started having significant results after about 3 months. The doctor stated that he had heard of this helping a certain percentage of people.

gooseberry guy... I have been trying Ginko Biloba. I have been taking it for almost a month, it still has not helped. I have been trying every remedy with no luck.

I had this for about six months, not sure why. I used a radio or television turned on high enough so I didn't concentrate on the tinnitus. My aunt, who's had it for many years, does the same.

Joann, I hear of some, like you, whose tinnitus stopped. I am hoping & praying mine will too!

I have tinnitus, which was brought on as the result of a head injury I received in a car wreck 4 1/2 years ago. Mine will never go away. It kind of sounds like I am "listening to the ocean" in a seashell 24/7. Most of the time I can ignore it, but it seems when things are really quiet or if I am really tired, it bothers me the most. Unfortunately I also have 35% hearing loss as a result of the injury and it will deteriorate over the years. Very frustrating, as I'm only 41 and now deafer than my parents. My DH also has hearing loss from many years of ear infections and also siren noises (he's a paramedic) so between the two of us, we spend a lot of time saying, "What??!!" We probably drive our kids crazy! LOL! Eventually I will need hearing aids, but am not anxious to go that route until I have to.

The only advice I have is to have background music going during the times it is bothering you the most.
