cataract surgery

Can you have a cataract removed without having a replacement lens put in? Can you still see properly? Will you need coke bottle lenses? My sis is going to do that because she thinks they will not last long and she had a terrible problem with the first removal and blamed it on the implanted lens. I think she just had a bad surgeon.

I don't think you can have cataract removed & not put in corrective lens. Both my parents had the surgery & dad's 1st 1 made things worse in that eye, 2nd surgery with different dr. & he could see birds, mountains, trees, air planes, He loved his "new"sight! Mom had both eyes done & helped her vision a lot, it has been several yrs now & I think she could use new eye glasses.. She could use better lighting in some areas of house too. Getting a good surgeon makes all the difference. So ask around & see who is really good & also try checking dr. out on the Internet.

Sunny I have 2 sisters who really hate doctors, they think they can heal themselves with herbs. They think all doctors want is money and won't go unless they absolutely have to. My youngest told me she had bugs in her eyes and wouldn't go to an eye doctor until her son forced her to. It was a retina detaching.

I have had some doctors I didn't like because they push drugs on me when I tell them I won't take them, they also lied to me about side effects. I started looking for one who lets me make my own decisions, I found him. If I have a problem he suggests something and is okay with my decision not to take them.

I am a very high risk for cataract removal in my left eye. My optometrist told me we are lucky to have some of the best eye surgeons in the country here in our city. I didn't like the first one who evaluated my eyes. When I asked the odds of my surgery being successful he said 50 and 10%, then changed the subject and didn't explain the numbers. He sounded like a used car salesman. The next surgeon I went to told me exactly why I was high risk and said my chances of a success were 85% but also advised me to put it off until "I" felt it was time to do it. My optometrist will dilate my eyes every year and make sure I don't wait to long.

I'll 'reply' here too, Colorlady. It's been 10 months since my surgery. I have adjusted a little more to the one (prematurely) operated eye with enlarged image and no ability to change focus, and the un-operated eye with the smaller, natural image and retained ability to change focus -- and glasses. I can't read as long as I'd like though. I hope you will not require artificial tears forever. (That isn't among my complaints.)

My lenses were over and above what my insurance would pay, too, in order to correct for severe astigmatism as well as my very serious myopia. My doctor was genius.....he corrected one eye just a wee bit less than perfect, which allows me to see near and far; I can read all but the tiniest print without readers and even apply my makeup! There is no way that I could be happier with the results. Even after two years, I still find myself groping for my glasses when I wake up in the morning, lol. The surgery was such a blessing for me. One thing that I had to deal with, especially for the first several months, was uncomfortable dryness. I was encouraged to use a gloppy gel at night, and a couple of different kinds of drops during the day. I still use lubricating drops a couple of times a day.

I was legally blind with immeasurable eyesight, so about 30 years ago, I had RK done to both eyes and within 7 minutes and 9 little slits in each eye, I was able to see better than 20/20...no glasses and I was thrilled! Being rid of those “pop bottle” eye glasses was the best money I have ever spent! When I developed cataracts, I did go to a specialist who was very familiar with RK eyes to have them removed because the cataracts grew into the slits. They did do a lens exchange in one eye since sight was not 20/20, but it was a simple surgery. If I have a good light, I do not need any glasses to read but keep readers handy. I do not drive at night anymore because I have the starting of MG and Glaucoma and oncoming lights cause a halo effect. But at 78, that is a minor problem .

I had Lasik on both eyes 20+ years ago. At the time, I knew I was going to need bifocals or reading glasses with the Lasix procedures. I detest bifocals so chose to finally have Lasik. Fast forward to about 3 years ago and I had a cataract develop in one eye. It was between a grade 3&4 so I could have waited bit decided to proceed. Good decision to go ahead and I would recommend it. The other eye has not developed a need for the surgery. About a year later, DH needed cataract surgery and decided to have both Lasik and the cataract surgery at the same time. One eye one day and the other eye two weeks later. Perfectly successful both times. Yes, he needs reading glasses but he couldn’t be happier. 20-15 vision in both eyes. Mine is still 20-20 and I have slight astigmatism which cannot be guaranteed to be successfully corrected surgically. edited finally to correct the spelling of Lasik
