St John's Wort outperforms Paxil for moderate-severe depression
Comments (32)Wishing to say something that may help all to understand proper usage of St. John's Wort within the realm of our modern world with its medicines, I point you all to a helpful website that discusses the Cytochrome p450 pathways. These are metabolic enzyme pathways, mostly in the liver, that our bodies utilize to "tag" molecules for elimination by the kidneys and also sometimes cause slower clearance of other molecules. So we talk about inducers and inhibitors as well as metabolism. Some of these substances, whether drugs, herbs, or even foods, affect other substances that come into our bodies by making them stronger or weaker in effect. For example, if a drug like paclitaxel, which is metabolized in CYP3A4 pathway is taken with St. John's Wort, a CYP3A4 inducer, the metabolism is speeded up and the drug clears from the body faster, making it less effective in killing cancer cells. The "side effects" may seem weaker because the effect of the drug is weaker. On the other hand, a form of Ginseng with a high concentration of ginsenoside Rh2, may act as a CYP3A4 inhibitor, making the metabolism of the paclitaxel slower, increasing thereby the effect of the drug. This also could cause a more noticeable "side effect." This is shown in cell culture studies that combined paclitaxel with Rh2. There may be other reasons why the IC50 increased (a measure of effectiveness in killing cancer cells in culture), but this is one of them. While we do have good data available from our pharmacies about cytochrome p450 pathways, the practitioners do not always have time to look things up. Recently, at an all-night pharmacy, I asked about a prescription I was picking up for a family member. That family member was considering taking either SJW or an SSRI, so I wanted to know about the reaction with cytochrome p450 and the new drug. The answer I got was curteous, but what was actually done was for the pharmacist to hand me the notes from the drug company that come in the package that the pharmacist uses to fill our bottles. I hesitate to think that most people might not ask about it and others who do may not know what the drug company's paper says. Of course, I want to be fair with the pharmacy. It was late at night. Maybe they take more time during the day. The website referenced below even mentions grapefruit juice and its effect. So be careful out there in your morning juice selection if you take drugs. I hope that my post helps with out marshalling the opposing sides too much. We all need to try to educate ourselves about the herbs and drugs that we take. I look forward to the day when the drug companies list the potential negative effects that their drugs may have on the herbs that I take. But I won't lose sleep waiting. Comments (16)Hi All! Well I guess I could say I weaned myself, with the help of my doctor.off HRTs. I tried a great variety from the onset of my menopause at 50. Tried Prempro pills first then premarin cream, vagifem suppositories, Combi Patch, and finally Femhrt, also garden variety health food store over counter progestone creams, phyto proleif order by mail. Yep you name it I tried it to fight the bad hot flashes night sweats, insomnia, heart palpitations. Just plain fatigue worn out menopausal lady. So now at 55 I think I have run the race , analyzed that each had its good and bad effects on me but in general doc agreed I must be allergic to estrogen products synthetic or otherwise. So I decided to quit altogether no more trials and errors. My flashes were pretty bad at first withdrawl wise, then lessened. I have only mild ones now, not to say they won't return with a vengeance. But my heart palps did lead me to a echocardiogram . Mitral valve prolapse as I may have mentio9ned in previous thread. Fibromyalgia plagues me from my bouts with insomnia, advil or motrim suffices for now. Do to my run down sleepless conditon and teaching and cold weather and bronchitis, well now I have pneumonia and a suspicious lung xray (non smoker) so must go to a pulmonary specialist on Tues. Ruled out blood clot from a blood test so either scar tissue or hopefully not some malignant growth. Oh well aging is certainly not boring, eventful yes. Wouldn't or couldn't have it any other way. Comments (1)I just weaned myself off, after taking them for the same reason. I would never recommend anyone taking anti depressants for symptoms of menopause. That’s just my personal experience. Comments (17)Good news. But the situation with the leveling is still there. If you wish to leave the tiles there, you will have to put some money and muscle and rented machines into this. It will probably take 2-3 days longer than if you hammered out the tiles. But if you insist, here are the list of instructions: 1. Rent sanding machine and purchase pads/belts for stone/concrete/tile 2. Tent off the kitchen with plastic sheeting; as well as air vents to prevent dust from getting into the ducts 3. Sand/rough up the tile (take the shiny finish off so that the next steps have something to grab on to). 4. With shop-vac, vacuum up the dust created by the sanding; wipe clean with water; allow to dry 5. Purchase primer AND Self Leveling Compound (SLC); make sure the two products are compatible....usually working with the same manufacturer is the way to go. 6. Roll on the primer onto the roughed up surface of the tile 7. Allow to cure (probably 1 day) 8. Mix recommended amount of SLC to cover your tiles in the MEDIUM amount of product allowable (read instructions to find out the MAXIMUM and the MINIMUM thickness and then pick an amount in between) 9. Trowel on or 'float' the cementatious material over the tile...remember to check for 'level' every few minutes (remember: SLC is NOT self-leveling = you will work very hard to keep everything level) 10. Allow to cure (24-48 hrs depending on your manufacturer) 11. Check for level. Mark the 'high' points and begin sanding those areas down 12. Vacuum up excess material; wipe down with lighting damp cloth 13. Allow to dry 14. Begin installing the floor. Whew! If you hire this out, you will pay $2/sf for this type of job. If it is a small kitchen, then you will pay a 'minimum job' fee which could look a bit more like $3-4/sf. If you remove the tiles you will pay $2/sf (same applies above). But the height variance between the two floors will be easier to deal with. You only need to 'lift' the kitchen floor to meet the REST of the house...which is much, much much smaller area to deal with....See Moremarilou
