Question on Magnolia 'Little Girl Series'
Comments (16)'Nigra' is M. liliiflora 'Nigra'. The Kosar and de Vos "Little Girl" (ugh) hybrids are from crosses between lily and star magnolias. A true 'Nigra' has all purple flowers, those with whitish interiors are M. liliiflora rather than M. liliiflora 'Nigra'. Flowers of all become markedly paler with age or high temperatures, photos showing flowers reaching the end of their bloom or produced at times other than the peak spring season will not be representative....See MoreA number of questions
Comments (8)Hi Baa, Sorry - yes - 'Sidborough Poppet' - I forgot... I have only grown this cultivar once, years ago. I bought it from Westacre Gardens in Norfolk, and it soon died on me (without flowering). The demise of the plant possibly reflected my cultivational ineptitude at the time -- I do not want to cast aspersions on West Acre! You know, I still don't know for sure the origin of this cultivar. If I had to have a stab, I'd say Viola riviniana; and if pushed 'Purpurea Group'. There is a tricky taxonomic point here in that if I am basically right, since I do not know the formal definition (in terms of size ranges of leaves, eg.) for the 'Purpurea Group' cultivar group, 'Sidborough Poppet' may fall within it or outside it. Anyway, all I can do is chew the point with you generally - sorry. I don't know about V. odorata 'Katy', though I would try checking for cultivars by that name as spelled in other languages, eg. 'Katja'. I have a worry, though, since there is an African Violet called 'Katja' or 'Rhapsodie Katja', etc. (see link). Another possibility (clutching at straws)... Morris May, who is a commercial grower of various members of the Viola genus, has a relation called Katie... Comments (5)Junelynne, I tend to agree with Leigh here. Why take something when you are perfectly healthy now? I started having signs of perimenopause at 39, and when I started having extremely heavy periods for weeks on end, I went on the pill. I'm 44 now. I recently went off the pill (so far so good, no periods, no cramps, no sore boobs, for two months!)...my aim is to go through menopause without a single medication or supplement, unless there is a clear medical reason to do so. My husband is a doctor (radiologist, so he's fairly clueless about primary care) and was a little leery initially. Doctors are just conditioned to prescribe (or take themselves) "something" to "cure" a problem, or perceived problem. I am sure many doctors prescribe meds and procedures because its easy money. Also because many patients will go away feeling uncared for and dissatisfied if all the doctor tells them to do is let nature take its course, or lose weight, exercise & eat right. But many docs are simply inculcated in medical school. I see this with Mick, and his coworkers. (Funny, I am in much better health than him, and I barely ever even take a vitamin--he takes tons, and medicates himself for every little thing.) Anyway...I am also active and eat very well. My mother likewise. She went through meno at 44. She is now 68, does yoga and walk/runs five miles every day. She steadfastly refuses to take anything, and is healthy as a horse. She smoked for over 20 years, and I recently quit. If women are getting osteoporosis more than 50 years ago, its probably because so many people in this country are fat, eat junk, and don't get off their butts to exercise. And because advertising scares them, they take a pill. My .02....See MoreAnyone have GERD or acid reflux?
Comments (32)I had GERD most of my life, and in the end I would even get heartburn from a drink of water. I woke up in the night with acid in my mouth. Finally, I told my gastro doctor that I couldn't take it any more. He sent me to see a specialist at the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, FL, and he performed a laproscopic procedure that gave me a new tight valve to keep the stomach acid where it belonged; in the stomach. That was over ten years ago, and I have never had heartburn or indigestion since then. I recommend going to a good gastro doctor and asking him about this procedure which is called lapro nissen fundoplication....See Moreemma
