Dragon tree and Dragon's Blood tree appear to be two distinct species, somewhat similar in appearance when mature and both extremely slow growing. D. cinnabari is a much more rare plant, at least in cultivation, and is endangered in its native habitat. There are supposedly some examples growing in SoCal and discussions of growing it from seed (apparently not too tricky) appear on a few xeric/tropical plant boards although there seems to be considerable debate as to exactly which species is being grown, D. draco being much more common, the common names being easily confused and the confirmed ID's of the parent plant(s) still uncertain. Apparently there is one at the UCLA Botanic Garden and I'd think the Huntington Botanic Garden would be a likely location as well. The umbrella-like appearance IS pretty cool but is a product of considerable time and I seriously doubt you would be able to create a similar effect in a bonsai'd form unless you had many (and we're talking decades) of years to devote to it. Even the much more readily obtainable D. draco looks pretty much like your standard variety houseplant dracaena, with a single, thinish trunk and a topknot of spikey foliage for a looong time.

In my experience, the best way to get a tree form is to let one grow for at least one year as it wants to establish a good root system. (even easier than green cuttings) Those make a small tree form plant, but to get a big one, let a new shoot come up from the roots. (Cut off any others.) It will grow to it's genetically programmed height before Y'ing. If that's not tall enough for you by the end of the summer, whack it off below the main Y and save the trunk and rootball for the following spring. If you are where you can leave them in the ground all year, even better. A new shoot will start somewhere near the top of the trunk. There may be several, but choose one and cut off the rest. This shoot will continue to grow until it's ready to Y again. That's how I got this one... If you look at the larger images linked, you can see right about where it crosses my arm a slight offset. That's where the new growth started from the old trunk.

Blood oranges are In season so check out any fruit store that specializes in large selection and eat the fruit. My friend and I started 10 Moro seeds. When you get the seeds carefully remove the outer shell and place it in moist dirt in a small food container and close the lid. I placed mine inside the heating duct of my 90 plus forced air furnace The seeds ran about 85 to 100 deg F. and were up in 5- 8 days. I'm a college student majoring in dental hygiene and I just finished a course called microbiology. Basically the study of organisms only visible by microscopes. One thing we studied was the herpes virus. Like a few people have posted before me there is herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. My professor and textbook stated that herpes simplex 1 infects basically from the waist and up while herpes simplex 2 infects the genital area. On rare occasions they can both infect other areas but the outbreaks are milder because the virus is not where it naturally thrives. Both are highly contagious but they're actually the most contagious right before the visible outbreak of blisters occur. I still wouldn't advise popping the blister because of scarring though. If you happen to accidently pop it, immediately use soap and water to wash off the infected area so that you prevent the spread of the infection .
