In nature, foxgloves grow at the edge of the woods, so yes, dappled sunlight would be perfect here in Okie. You got it right about staking and about wind protection. Protect them from the hot, drying southern winds and scorching afternoon sun. Mist them in the early morning hours during the dry, hot spells. Keep their feet cool and moist, but not standing in water. I set my sprayer on mist. They love it. Add finely chopped up Oak Leaf mold (mulch) to the soil where you plant them. It works for me. Adds tilth and nutrients and help hold moisture around their roots. They like the acidicness (is that a word?) and the seeds will germinate well in the acidy (is that a word?) soil. As for staking, they have very heavy flowerheads and tend to flop over, especially after heavy rains and a thunderstorm. (boo hiss). You can use slender bamboo poles, slender cane poles, dowel rods, or any kind of slender but sturdy stick or pole to support them. Those green tomato poles are okay. Lowe's carries the special poles like you mentioned for staking glads and foxgloves. They aren't too expensive, but I can't afford them even at that low price. You can use willow poles too, but watch out - they root and will grow! The best poles I have found are 7 ft. lengths of sucker rod. The ridges make the ties more secure and the heavy metal rods are great in storms and fierce rains and they don't show. I tie mine up with strips of pantyhose - they stretch and don't cut into the stalks and are cheap. I find them at garage sales for $1 a bag! I use them for tomato and rose ties too. Good for Gladiolas, as well. Remember too, foxgloves are biennial - they grow for a year, then bloom the next, go to seed, and then saddly, they die. keep the soil loose around them so the seeds that drop will be able to settle in and germinate. The trick is to keep them going in this cycle. You may have to introduce new seeds from time to time to keep viability of your foxgloves going. It just takes experience.
