SSI letter

My daughter recieved a ssi letter on yesterday saying " we will review your case to determine if we can make a fully favorable decision without holding a hearing. if we cannot make a decision on the record, we will schedule your case for hearing ". this is crazy because i have been waiting almost 2yrs for a hearing date. what if the decision is not fully favorable, does this means i have to wait another y

ear or so for hearing date?

You might want to consider using an attorney that specializes in SSI.

First of all, let me confirm something. Are you actually seeking SSI (Supplemental Security Income)? It is designed to help elderly, blind, and/or disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. OR are you actually referring to SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)? This is benefits paid to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes. SSDI is NOT based on income like SSI. Knowing which one you are seeking will help a lot.

As is mentioned above, it is very helpful to seek out the help of an attorney who specializes in this matter, especially if you have been working on this for a number of years. Most attorneys do not charge anything upfront to help. Their pay is usually a percentage of the back pay you will get IF you are successful in getting approved. If you are never successful, then they do not get paid. Make sure you confirm the charges upfront and get it in writing.

If we gave large donations to every charity that sends us a letter DH and I would be broke quickly. Well, that's what our governments have become. America is quickly becoming a nation of people who wish to be cared-for. Too frequently we give over our rights just so someone else "can take care of it." We've forgotten that our form of govt. is suppose to provide military protection for our Nation, conference with foreign govts. for the greater good, interstate commerce, and control of other things that are nation-wide. So why are they involved with so much else? And, the States govts. each have their own purposes, which have also been expanded to the point where they no longer function. When an entity tries to do everything, then nothing gets done well.

Oh gosh!!!! Don't even get me started on SS! DD collects for DGS because of Steve's death. His other son from first marriage does too, rightfully so. BUT with his ex wife and DD eligible to draw at some "possible future point" everything is screwed up every few months!!!!!!!BIGTIME screwed up too. Neither want to draw for themselves and have told that repeatedly. Doesn't matter. If you get a notice you've been overpaid according to their calculations since there may be 2 "possibilities" somewhere in the next 30 years you'd better have the $$ to send in.

I believe you need to contact SSI, you said you get disability benefits, and inform them of your reduced income. They will be able to advise you how to apply for Medicaid. At least in my state that's the procedure. You Department of Social Services may also be of help. I wish you the best possible outcome to your situation - it's a tough one.

I had the same experience as bob_cville...got a letter from IRS and had to call them. No other option. I receive SS survivor's benefits and the letter said I may qualify for more $ on my own retirement account, so I may want to apply for retirement benefits. It's possible to look at potential benefits online, EXCEPT if you are currently receiving any SS benefits. It sounded good to me, until the 75 min wait on hold- and the person I talked to couldn't help me, she was only able to make an appt for me to apply. That was in early May, the first available appt is July 5!! And if I have to cancel or move it, I have to call and wait on hold for another hour or more; it's crazy making. Then 2 weeks later, I received a letter saying that my application for SSI was denied. I never applied for SSI, it was not mentioned in my conversation with the agent....(I know I wouldn't qualify, so would never have applied for it). What a total waste of govt resources to send me that letter.
