Cyst, Abscess or Boil?

My daughter-in-law has something on her stomach that looks like an open hole. It is very small and is perfectly round.

It has drained some blood but otherwise doesn't bother her.

Anyone have any idea if this could be a cyst, an abscess, a boil or what?

The only person who is qualified to answer that is a physician who can do a hands-on exam ... and if I had a hole in my abdomen that was draining blood, I'd see a doctor as fast as possible.

She had one of these before and it cleared up in the same area. I'm trying to encourage her to go to the doctor.

I never SAID Accutane did anything for pilonidal cysts. They did help with the massive number of cysts he got on his upper body and face/head/neck, but never did a thing with other types of cysts he has had. His pilonidal cyst has been gone for a good three years now, and trust me, I check that little scar on a regular basis while I'm looking him over for developing cysts, weird-looking moles, and other skin irregularities... we trade, he does my monthly mole checks and breast exams. LOL HIS doctor says that it does happen that they do just sometimes recede on their own and never present any problems, so he prefers to leave them alone unless they're actually causing problems other than cosmetic. (Long story as to why DH's wasn't removed when it was being cyclically nasty, and I'm unfortunately extremely familiar with the contents of pilonidal cysts TYVM.)

Les, I love my dentist too. He is a wonderful guy and he babies me because he knows I'm so phobic. My hands sweat as soon as I walk thru the office door, even for a routine cleaning. I am such a rational person in every other area of life, but I am wreck about the dentist. I have had one root canal and you're right, it wasn't any worse than having a regular crown done. For anything other than a regular cavity (which I haven't had in years -- but now I seem to be replacing old, large cavities with crowns about once every couple of years) my dentist now gives me Conscious Sedation, which is the best thing that's ever happened to me! I highly recommend it! If I didn't have it, they wouldn't be able to get me into the office. I take an anti-anxiety drug (forget the name now) an hour before my appointment, and by the time it's time to go in, DH practically has to carry me, I'm so out of it. Then I have regular novocaine and after the procedure is over, I barely remember a thing. It unfortunately "loses" a day for both DH and me, because he has to stay with me when I get home (so I don't do anything stupid in my drugged state) and I usually have to take a nap when I get home... but that's what we have to do. Fortunately my teeth aren't SO bad that this has to happen too often! I told my dentist once that I would rather give birth than have a cavity filled!

We all need to educate ourselves about our health. I keep my own medical history writing down dates of doctor visits, reason, diagnosis, tests done and then I get copies of all the results. And I'm fairly healthy. I research on the internet too - but you really need to be aware of the source. Even Dr. Oz who I like for his practical approach, has mentioned medical studies to reinforce his position - but several of those studies were performed on such a small segment that they are not statiscally significant. It doesn't mean that they are inaccurate, just that larger groups need to be studied. I think the research prepares you to be a better patient. Your questions are more focused and you can then optomize your appointment time. I even take notes while I'm in the office. If a physician didn't like that I would find another one and tell the first why I was leaving. However I'm sure many doctors have heard some really bizarre theories suggested by their patients too.

Okay odd question...is it on a stretch mark? I have rather large stretch marks from my son (18 years ago, you'd think they'd go away, no way), anyway I sometimes get those, they aren't "holes" but look like a boil or large pimple. Dr said that since the skin in thin there due to the stretch mark, I get a tear in the 2nd and 3rd layer of skin (from them too being stretched. Top layer is thicker scar tissue, so it doesn't break through. Did that make sense? He said not to worry...but that is a Dr. telling me not to worry after he's examined it. Daughter should do the same.

It doesn't really matter which it is, it needs to be seen by a doctor. Anytime that there is an abnormal opening that is draining, there is a chance of a serious infection developing.

Convince her that she really doesn't want that to happen. The sooner it's attended to, the better.

No, it's not on a stretch mark and she did go to the dermatologist. They numbed it and are doing a biopsy. Will post the results when they come back in.

My daughter had one on her leg, it would get infected occasionally and yucky yellowish stuff would come out. I finally convinced her to go to a doctor (when she was like 13) and the doctor did surgery in his office and closed it up. No problems.

I think these are inherited, I have one on my ear and my mom has some near her left ear.
