Just a follow-up. Mom didn't like the look of the walk-in tub. It also has a distinct disadvantage. You have to be in the tub to run the water because the level of sitting is so high. You also have to wait until the water drains out of the tub to open the door before you can get out. They also have some that can be used as a shower in addition to tub. This was an advantage because the water would continually drain out while showering, but could sit down if needed to.

The walk-in tub world can be confusing. It may seem like there are tons of companies manufacturing walk in tubs when actually there are just a few, and they make tubs for other companies. For instance Live Wire Oak post comparing American Standard to safety tub. Safety Tub actually manufactures American Standards walk-in tub. that's why they look almost exactly the same. Yes, you can get stainless steel piping and even glass piping. However, there is a difference between expensive and wasteful. Stainless steel piping will likely be 10 times the cost of copper for no discernable advantage. The piping itself will likely only be 6 to 8 times more but since it is much more difficult to solder there is going to be some sections that need to be cut out and redone unless you are using a plumber that has experience with stainless steel, which you are not going to find on any non-industrial plumbing job. It is difficult to help without more specifics about what you are trying to achieve. PVC is not a carcinogen or a suspected carcinogen, it doesn't offgas, and doesn't leach chemicals in water. This is not to say that PVC is necessarily safe, as there are impurities in PVC and flexible PVC has phthalates. However, there are impurities in most types of piping and to really help we need to know the specific concern and the goal. So are you worried about indoor air quality and want to minimize offgassing or are you worried about ingesting leached chemicals and want to limit your exposure through drinking water, or are you worried about the effects through transdermal exposure of leached chemicals? For general health, I would recommend copper supply lines and wouldn't worry so much about PVC drain lines, but I am happy to have some input if PVC drain lines are a concern. --- As for the tub, I too share the concern that off-brand tubs manufactured in countries with lower consumer protection standards may be problematic.
